Newbie Atom Questions

Posted by: George H on 17 February 2018

Hello - I'm brand new to this forum, I have a Naim NAP250 and collected an Atom last week which the 250 is driving. When the Atom works it's sounds lovely, however, the App locks up regularly and the Atom can hang and sometimes restart it's self. My son has checked my network settings, the Atom is connected via ethernet anyway, he's a network engineer who works for Fujitsu Services so knows networks well. Any ideas or advice please, I must be doing something wrong.

Unfortunately the new unity range are having software difficulties. If you have a search you should find all the info you require as it's a very frequent topic of late.

Best of luck....contact Naim

Thank you for the replies. I'll call them on Monday. Poor show from Naim if they are having software issues, the product is over six months old now!

Before you do that make sure your dealer is informed, he should initially sort it out. And then if that fails return and give a replacement or your money back.

Thank you Gazza. I'm taken back in truth, Naim are selling high-end streamers with known issues. That's not the Naim that I know. Dreadful.

Naim released the range far to soon, unfinished

We are many which will have second thoughts replacing our old UQ etc.

I'm in no hurry

I'm astounded at the amount of issues with the new Uniti on here, what's going on Naim, when will these issued be fixed?

Posted on: 18 February 2018 by Pev

The Uniti range does work perfectly for many of us. Your dealer has taken a enough of a mark up to make sure it is working in your home. If he can't manage that he should replace the product as faulty.

The only issue that is down to Naim is that, possibly due to their bodged launch leading to pent up demand, they are letting units out of the door with faults due to skimped quality control. If there were generic design issues with the new Unitis none of them would work properly.

Thank you for your reply Pev, I'm sure my dealer will assist, I have dealt with them for years. I must say though, the second part of your response knocks my confidence in the brand somewhat. "skimped quality control" for the price of their products that is very poor.

Weekly issues with Nova even worse with the Atom (prior), yes people say power cycle (if not app reinstall, if not hardware factory reset), but if I wanted a half baked product I would have gone looking at kick starter projects.

Outstanding sound, ruined by school boy type software.

That's why I waited for a while. Have they issued a statement, or indicated when these software issues will be fixed?

Posted on: 18 February 2018 by Gazza

We did ask for an update on what fixes were being worked on... Rivhard made sure that was heard at Naim.....many weeks ago, still no clue.

I've created a poll here: Naim Uniti & Mu-So issue poll. I would be really interested to know how many users have issues and what type of issue. Also those who don't.

Happily contributed, came to my own personal conclusion, next time will dump the problematic device back to dealer rather than dealing with Naim direct. Nothing like returned boxes to get a response!

Just to be clear, my saying skimped quality control is an assumption based on the number of people having real problems with a basically fantastic product.

Erm, sorry to be direct Pev but that appears to contradict the previous statement, I can't see that anyone knows the real number of people experiencing issues. I would agree that in principle they should be fantastic products and at a starting price of £2000 the consumer should expect nothing less - but they are not are they? They do not function correctly. I've given up reading the vast amounts of posts listing issues - it goes back months.

Another post about the same problems - come on Naim - say something.

So, with all of the negative feedback from naim longtime users and newbies about the new Uniti line. Should a newbie or anyone purchase a the new Uniti line ??? It seems kinda crazy that a company with such great track record with past products would have as many complaints from loyal customers and newbies alike & would not be able to nip the problems in the bud sooner than has been reported here. As a newbie to Naim myself I'm trying to stay optimistic and have faith about not having any problems pop up, given the amount of us dollars I will be giving to Naim being that I am about a month out from purchasing a Nova myself. I must admit, Im kinda of frighten.

I wouldn’t be too worried. Naim stand by their products.

There have been hundreds if not already thousands sold - very popular I’m told, and so I guess some issues are to be expected, especially as often it boils down to networking issues, which clouds things somewhat. This forum does of course only represent a tiny fraction of Naims customers. But if anyone does have an issue, often this is one of their first ports of call, so I don’t know what a poll here might show as it would generally be weighted towards some grievance.  Naim are there to help so call or email them.

Just to clarify again - I have had a Nova since October and it has been 100% faultless - does everything I ask of it and sounds fantastic. Never had to reboot or reset. From the experiences reported on this forum some people are having problems. These must be either a faulty product or a problematic installation context - if the design was faulty it would not work for anyone.

My point is that to address the problem either return the product if it is clearly faulty or get your dealer to set it up for you if the problem is more subtle. I don't think there is going to be a magic firmware update that will solve all the problems reported here - AFAIK the main tweaks in the pipeline relate to multiroom and display options. As the late great Captain Beefheart said: "There ain't no Santa Claus on the evening stage". Make your dealer earn his/her money!

I completely agree with Pev. My experience is same too.

I have Nova and Core. I had some initial small amplification problem with Nova. But them Naim replaced it completely and then onwards it works faultlessly. And everything is really so great.

Just as a suggestion, majority of these problems can be related to the router setup, wifi setup etc. First try direct ethernet connection to Unities.

Sourav

It's not just connection issues is it... Some very useful features were not included in the new Uniti range and some have been left out after initially being on the marketing material.. this never gets mentioned in the reviews. But a lot of people (as I did) only realise this once they get one of the new units home.

Not saying it's a bad product, hardware seemed fantastic, as always. But the software does need more work.

Thanks for your viewpoint Richard. I am ready to invest in this platform, the Atom the start really. The poll was to gauge how big the issue is. Granted only around 27 people have responded but 23 people have outstanding issues. It's great to see that Naim still stand by their products but all of the negative comments and issues on here alone are enough to put anyone off. Naim are not saying anything, at least that I can see in the progress section, surely saying nothing is far worse than acknowledging the issues and setting clear expectations about fixes.

I got my Uniti Star as part of the first shipment of these units to the U.S. and mines work flawlessly so far. I use to have the Unit2 and the Star works much better and sounds much better also.
