naim and LP12

Posted by: Franz K on 18 February 2018

Given all the more or less recent and most recent upgrades and third party improvements for the LP12 such as Khan, Carmen, Keel, Tranquility, Urika, Urika II, Radikal, Lingo IV, Booplinth, Stiletto, Skorpion, Eklipse, and this list is far from complete, it is truly a pity that  naim discontinued the ARO some while ago.   Isnt it time for an ARO revival, possibly even a super ARO?

I had a Nima fitted....

And before that, what?

Sorry my old tonearm was an Akito.

Still with my Ekos SE. Lovely arm especially with the Kandid. Played sparingly though as I can’t face the cost of a replacement cartridge right now!

Yes that is a problem with high end cartridges.   As I’ve now retired I’ve put aside a reserve which I hopefully will be able to refresh.

I’m wondering whether a Nima will be an affordable introduction to a unipivot and an upgrade on my ittock LVII.

Wouldn't a Kore give you more?

(now back to the thread).

Possibly but a Kore will cost me in advance of £450 whilst a Nima bought with the proceeds of my ittock would cost me £100 and for a brand spanking new tonearm.  So far as the Kore goes I have had too many disappointments waiting for some night and day difference and ending up straining to hear the most subtle changes  in my system to be anything but very sceptical about these types of market driven upgrades.

I have stated before my cloth ears are not as fined tuned as some on this and other forums

I’d advise caution; “new” isn’t always “best”. The Nima is undoubtedly a good arm but it would have to go some to better a well-fettled Ittok. Have a word with Peter at Cymbiosis, he’s got tons of experience and can be trusted 100%. He might suggest having the Ittok re-wired by J7 and add a sKale for good measure.

If I was you and had £450-ish to spend, I’d seriously consider a Tiger Paw Tranquility, which is tremendous vfm.
