editing missing tags
Posted by: karma737 on 23 February 2018
I recently was made aware that some CDs can be ripped onto a Unitiserve but may not be recognized by any of the databases used by the device (AMG, Rovi, FreeDB and MusicBrainz). When this happens the music is ripped without any identifying tags. The album ends up in a folder labeled "unknown" and the songs have no title. Makes it hard to search for that music in the future. When I use Apple Finder to access the server I can open that folder and click on the album as well as the songs but I don't see any way to type in the correct tags. Do I need some special app for this. I thought I could just highlight and type over "unknown" and change to the correct info. ???

Most of my albums are like that.
So what I do is edit the album in MusicBrainz and Uniti Core gets those information without any problem. I use picard app from Music Brainz to link the CD's unique Id.

You should never edit the contents of the music folder on a computer - use the N-Serve app on iPhone, iPad or Mac.

How is that done on the n-Serve app??

Go to the album you’d like to edit.
Press EDIT in the top right corner
Edit as appropriate, click done.

Adam: I would have thought it would be simple like this but neither of my apps looks like yours. I use n-Serve on my iPhone and on a MacBook. Is there some way I can include a screen shot with this post?

There's definitely an edit function on both the iPhone and Mac versions of n-Serve. Bring up the "unknown album" and it should be right there, possibly an icon only, rather than saying "edit". On the Mac, mouse-over the icon to see what the icon means.
I'm currently not at home with my main system, so can't take a screen shot.

You can edit on an iPhone as well. On a Mac, in N-Serve, control-click on an album/track and select Edit.

My post had an iPad screenshot. This is what it looks like on an iPhone.
The first screenshot: I’ve circled the edit button.
the swcond screenshot: view of an edit screen.

Hello Everyone. Thanks for the info on how to edit. It's been very helpful. Here's where I am at with this. Using the n-Serve app on my iPhone I have now been able to edit the album, artist and song titles successfully. Just didn't know what that button was for. However, I have two laptops (mine and my wife's) both with the n-serve app. She is able to "control-click" and edit on her lap top but when I use mine and control-click I get the same menu but "edit metadata" is grayed out. I can't highlight it and do any editing. Any thoughts on why that is. We both have the same version of n-Serve for Mac (1.4).

Only one n-Serve can be connected at a time (if I recall correctly).... perhaps that’s what is happening on your laptops...

You are correct. Shut one down, had to restart the second one and now it able to edit. Thanks a lot.

Glad it worked out ok.
Happy listening.

You can use the N-Serve app on multiple devices, but using it using different devices to edit at the same time sounds like asking for trouble. I’ve never tried it, but I’m guessing the edit option has been greyed out on the second device by design.
