New Turntables - Bristol Show
Posted by: Mr Frog on 23 February 2018
Anything exciting announced?
I thought Rega had a "brand new" turntable to add to their range ....
I saw on Instagram they have a new P6. Not sure how far along it is but will check whilst I’m there tomorrow.
Looks like an old post from July last year on Instagram. New p6 is available now. Looks very nice
No, the "new" turntable unveiled at the Bristol show is just a Record Store Day limited edition of the Planar 2. Details are on the Rega website. The new P6 has been out for some time.
Yeah, my mistake
They have a Planar 1+ Plus on their new price list, with a built in MM phono stage.
Rather disappointing release, when the Rega promotional info (Bristol Show) referred to a “brand new addition to the range” .... considering that this is a 500 unit limited edition, I can’t see this as an ‘addition to the range’ because once they’ve all sold, there will no longer be an ‘addition to the range’!
I was hoping for something above the RP10 or between the 8 and 10
Not a huge issue but just disappointed following the way it was promoted in the run up to the Bristol Show .... bit of an anticlimax really.
I guess that’s media for you .... all about spin
One or two TTs on demo at Bristol. All pretty much the same (“variations on a theme”) apart from Mitchell’s Orbe.....
In fact, the whole show was distinctly underwhelming.....(Naim included, sadly).
What was the Orbe being shown ?

Always a difficult one isn't it? The PR and marketing people mess with your hopes but then what are you going to do, take your business esewhere? And in the process, cut off your nose to spite your face.
Well said and very true

No idea, I’m a Sondek person. However it had prodigious bass!!

I tend to agree in the show, including Naim, being underwhelming.
The exception being Bowers & Wilkins who held a really good dem.
Suzy Wong ...”Prodigious Bass” ..... as in a positive or negative way

The Naim demo in the cellar of doom was awful. Entirely down to the dreadful Focul loudspeakers - although there was one poor chap on the front row who nearly rocked his head off. Fortunately Kudos saved day as far as Naim is concerned by demo-ing the new 505s with the same Naim streamer/amp/thingie. Fab.
Mitchell demo was disappointing.
Chord dem was superb, reassuring and highly enlightening.
Any Funk Firm stuff?

I am so glad it wasn't just me. In 31 years I have missed about 5. This was the worst ever.
There was hardly a room where people were listening. I went to the Naim room four times to try and find out why people here are so excited by their equipment. Every time the conversation was louder than the music.
I know I have different tastes to most here, for me the best rooms were Audio Note, JBL and Klipsch. Sadly for a resurgence of turntables so many were using show standard vinyl if 30 years ago.
Funk Firm were there but I didn't venture into their room.
Best turntable I heard there today was, surprisingly, the Technics SL-10000R. A £14k (including arm) direct drive super deck. They were using an AT ART1000 cart, a Luxman phono stage, their own top of the range electronics (including £20k power amp) and their own concentric driver floorstanders. What I liked most about this deck was that it didn't sound like vinyl - the timing and stability of the music is stunning. Which probably means it won't appeal to turntable lovers, maybe. Possibly.

Thanks - I bought a secondhand PT Anniversary many years ago and it worked fine for a few years then the PSU or motor went funny and it didn't spin well. Wanted to chat to them to see if they could evaluate it for potential repair. Annoyingly, last time I checked it I think the sapphire on the inverted bearing may have shattered which is probably a showstopper :-(
Probably
..... I need to do some more listening because a Rega representative told me that the RP8 is still supplied with its original dedicated TT-PSU which is ‘finely tuned’ to that specific deck.
He actually advised AGAINST using the new Neo PSU with the RP8 ... saying that it MAY be detrimental to the sound .... and that the original supplied TT-PSU was what I should be using.
I had thought that the Neo would be far bettter and also it provides the functionality to adjust the speed to a perfect 331/3 rpm ... since I’ve heard that some RP8’s run fast and have speed issues ???????
But based on the Rega representatives advice, the Neo isn’t the answer and I guess he is the expert

Turntable lovers? Well, I guess it takes all sorts...
As for a turntable that makes vinyl not sound like vinyl? Thanks, but no.
My point exactly. That's why I liked it, but suspect those that use a TT as their main source probably won't.

i don’t understand because on the website, the neo psu is presented as working with rp3, rp6 and rp8. I miss something?

turntable ‘lovers don’t like perfect timing and stability of music? curious conception of turntable sound love!
Me neither .... seems really odd re the Neo and Jason Kennedy ((Ear) tried it earlier this month and said it made a huge difference and was a great IMPROVEMENT over the dedicated RP8 psu.
confusing or what?
Anyone tried the Neo with their RP8?
