Bi-wire links that work well with Super Lumina speaker cable

Posted by: crackie on 23 February 2018

Just about to get a set of SL speaker cables, however a speaker cable link set to use with my ProAc D48R speakers is proving a challenge. Currently have NACA5 with a set of Chord Signature link cables (better than the supplied pins, not saying much, a safety pin would be better than them......) .

The cost of matching SL link cables was truly frightening when I was quoted the cost. Even the Chord Sarum T link set was half the cost. I imagine the SL link set cost is to reflect the special SL plugs that I assume are quite expensive as well as a fidly hand assesmbly process for such a short cable. So not giving naim a hard time here, it is what it is, just asking for feedback with anyone here who has to use SL cables with a bi-wire speaker setup and what you are using. Or will I be hard pressed to tell the differance over a set of Chord Sgnature link set cables no matter what I try ?

Just about impossible to demo. the SL link set as they are factory order only in my area.

Cheers,

Peter

You could try Vertere, some of their cables look suspiciously similar to SL.

Why not ask ProAc for advice on how to rewire the links between the sockets and the crossover so that you only have to use one set of terminals. If you have to use biwire links, why not use NacA5. Quite a few people use them with SL cables. Cheap as chips.

I use Vertere Pulse-X jumpers (spades on both end) with my SL set.

Thank you for the tips. I'll give the NACA5 link set a go first, I found a very northern UK city dealer who make up these link sets and can ship them to my area. For the price it's the one i'll try first off.

Cheers Adam on the set you use, still a bit rich for my blood for only a link set. But I will keep it in mind if the NACA5 set fails to impress.

HH I don't want to mess with the speaker terminal set up, no one I would trust in my town even if I did want to make changes. I'll take your advice and give the NACA5 link set a go. When I did the SL>NACA5 and back again for a week long demo. I thought the basics of the SL cable were there in the NACA5, just the SL was so very much better.

I wouldn’t worry too much and stay with NAC A5 links for now. At the end of the day you could also agonise over the wiring inside the speaker - could be bell wire for all you know

If this is a stupid question you'll have to forgive my ignorance but, wouldn't having a different link cable to the main speaker cable mean that one part of the speaker may suffer from some form of signal degradation relative to the other and therefore compromise performance or limit the improvements which may have been seen from the upgrade to the main cable otherwise?

Hi Peter

I have tried the speaker links you mentioned .Used the Chord signature links that came with the speakers for several months, nothing wrong with them ,then my good dealer asked if I wanted to try the SL links on a sale or return basis. The SL links were new so I played as much music as I can in the first three weeks.Week four just swapping round links many many times. Each time when the SL links were in place I or rather we (like to gather my family round when I demo.something) notice that the sound was less bright/glassy,therefore would be less fatigue during long listening. I like what I was hearing but as you say the cost is frightening and I was a bit undecided simply based on what it cost.My heart said yes but my head said something else.Asked the family what they think and was so relieved I got a Yes ,the SL links sounds better and as its a long term thing buy them was the answer .that’s what I did and have been very happy with them.

If you have a chance try them and see what you think.

Cheers Ayap1, food for thought. I'll ask again regarding a demo. chance. It may be one of those leap of faith things if I do lay down the cash (still waiting for a sale to come trough on another item that will swing my chance of getting these). I'll see how the NAC A5 links go first & demo these off the SL set if I can swing a demo. The dealer tune may change if I get the SL cables first, than ask the question again.

I use Nordost links on my Proacs with NACA 5.   They have them all the way up the line and they outclass the Proac factory links.    A little Nordost goes a long way but their speaker links are worth a try.  I also have their 8 outlet power strip with Valhalla II in and Powerlines out.   Sounds great.     I also ground this strip using my second ground grid.    The first grid grounds the main plug.      If you haven’t tried it, don’t knock it.

Yes, and some speakers will present a preference on what takes the first main feed.

That was also the beauty of my Ovator S600s and now the Focal Sopra 2s - just one glorious set of terminals.

As a cable to build links to go from the bass terminals to mid or HF terminals , DNM Resolution would probably work very well.  It has exceptional preservation of detail and timbrel nuances, the main weakness it has in general use is at low frequencies; in this context that won't be an issue.  I wouldn't recommend using it the other way round (i.e. going from mid or HF terminals to bass terminals).
