Artemiz 2 Tonearm

Posted by: Steve O on 25 February 2018

Hi guys,

I am running a Xerxes 20+ with Artemiz 2 arm and Dynavector xx-2 cartridge.

I am finding that when I move the arm towards the centre spindle and then release it, it drifts back towards the arm rest. This also happens when I try to lower the arm onto a record.

If I remove the anti skate string from the arm it does not drift and does not move when lowering the arm so to my mind the anti skate must be the root of the problem. I assume if the arm drifts from the centre outwards then there is too much anti skate. However after hours of fiddling I can't seem to get the arm to not drift with the anti skate string in place.

Anyone with any suggestions please?

Regards,

Steve O.

Use some stylus cleaner on the arm support - the surface of the bit that descends. Should stop it sliding so much. Works 90% on my Rega 300 - never perfect though.

The Artemiz is a brilliant tonearm but has a fiddly ant-skate.  But it should pull back a little from the centre spindle.  The instruction manual explains.

Hi Steve,  I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your Artemiz arm.

You have too much anti skate dialled into your arm. I know it was one of the problems with the mark 2 arm. It has been sorted with the reference Artemiz with a new mechanism, however that doesn’t help you. You need to dial right on the anti skate and if that doesn’t help then it may need looking at by Roksan themselves.

Hi Polarbear

By dial right do you mean adjust the spring from the 90° setting to the right to give more slack on the string?

Hi Steve,

You can slacken the tension on the string by moving the dial to the right, maybe look at moving the string further down the string and you can find that the tiny ring at the end of the shaft can again be turned to loosen the tension on the string, its tricky and takes a bit of time to get it right.

When its right its best to leave alone

Do you have the manual for an Artemiz, Steve O?

I am sure one of the owners on here could lend you one.

seems strange, if you go to the website direct, I cannot find a manual, but Google comes up with a couple, if not try The Vinyl Engine website

good luck

Thanks for the replies gentlemen.

The problem started when I got the new Dynavector XX-2. I decided rather than just change the cart, I'd go all out and give the deck a service while I was at it. So the manual came out and several adjustments were made. The most important of which appears to have been to the anti skate dial. The arm of the spring wasn't in the position the manual said it should be when leaving the armrest or when approaching the centre of the record. It was adjusting this dial that started the problems with the arm drifting. Once again it isn't in the position specified in the manual, BUT the arm is no longer drifting so the anti-skate appears to now be correct.

I'll see how things go for a week or so before I revisit the set up (if required).

Many thanks.

I am guessing the Dynavector XX-2 is a heavier cartridge than the one you had before Steve, hence the need to re align the anti-skate. I know when I bought my Dynavector everything had to be re-set.  Forget the position in the manual, if the anti skate seems to be right then leave it where it is.
