Low cost upgrade for Vinyl

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 26 February 2018

Any suggestions for not too expensive upgrades on the vinyl end?

I'm running the Rega RP6 / Exact into Stageline/HicapDR into a 272/250DR into Harbeth SHL5+s.

One thought I had was moving to Rega Aria, and the newer Ania MC cartridge, and selling off the Stageline/HiCapDR/Exact - would probably be a $0 upgrade - but also risk of too much chop and churn for no benefit.

I have heard the Ania into Rega Fono MC and liked it very much, so what you are suggesting makes sense to me.

Hi MM, the Ania + Aria makes a great deal of sense and is a great pairing.

As an alternative, I wonder whether a trade in for an RP8 might be financially attractive (if not free!).

Either would be good, though the better TT potentially more so but for more money.

Hope this helps, if only a bit. FT

+1. If you have the old TTPS then moving to the new Rega Neo is a substantial upgrade. Also if you have older TT belt then the Rega white belt upgrade is cheap and well worth doing.

I moved to an Ania from a DV20XL a few months ago.

I'm using mine through a stageline powered from Aux 2.

It has been a significant upgrade and vinyl has resumed its top spot in my system

Thanks guys. I'll look into this at some point - Listening to Melody Gardot Live in Europe via my vinyl rig at work - and wondering why folks bother with digital at all. There seems to be so much drama for naught in digital.

From a record companies perspective, vinyl would be the way to go. Perishable medium so you have to buy again if you run a record bare. If you like a record so much, it won't pain you to buy again.

Minimized risk of piracy - sure you can make needledrops but it's not the same thing.

Measure my record player for speed via the App that rega recommends. It's consistent, but slower that what it should be. Doesn't bother me. :-)

You are starting to get it Mango

Your suggestion to switch to Ania/Aria sounds like a good decision to me, best of luck

I seem to remember that you are in IT / Software. I suggest you to use a (analogue) pen. Much better device than computers to do design.

Most of the best IT people,I know, have done their best design with whiteboard markers, so you're probably right.

Most of my creative work is indeed done with a pencil and white sheets of paper.

I've also gone back to using fountain pens - they slow the pace of writing enough for it to be enjoyable - and allow me to think better.

We already have whiteboards at work that capture our drawings and transform them into digital sketches/word/powerpoint docs. Hopefully, we won't need to rely on keyboard/mice in another few years.

The Nova etc. is already behind times. No Alexa integration. :-)

Source first Mango, especially in the realm of analogue - change the cartridge for something in the next price bracket such as the DV10x5, Ania, Hana etc.

Well, if we're talking "source first" with regard to the record playing hardware then the proper hierarchy  goes deck before arm before cartridge.  In which case, if looking for a low cost upgrade to the deck, I would recommend a listen to the new Rega NEO PSU before anything else.

I would pursue the groove tracer upgrades to get rid of that glass platter and cheap spindle.

I always thought the glass platter was one of the nice points when I had rega ..

MM, lots of good suggestions here. if you wanted to devote a few more bucks to the project, i'd suggest the RP8, a Dynavector 20X2L cartridge, and a used Dyna P75 phono stage.

Is there anything like the Tranquillity for the Rega? It was a very cost-effective upgrade for the LP-12.
