Quick question on power supply addition

Posted by: rega1 on 02 March 2018

hi all, long time since I have posted. I have an opportunity to purchase a used hicap dr to enhance my system. Not sure where it should be placed if I do purchase it. I can test drive it for  while, but I am looking for suggestions based on some of the members past experience.

System is currently

supernait 1//NDX/ LP12 with geddon, prefix, linn Krystal, circus,aro/dynaudio focus 340, naim naca5 and a flatcap powering the prefix and Supernait. Everything has naim power lines. I don’t listen to the NDX as much.

If I put the hicap on the Supernait and power the prefix from Supernait AUX, do I get the hicap dr benefit passed on and eliminate the flatcap? Any suggestions on where the hicap dr should go first as a rule of thumb.? System sounds very good as is, hoping for some detail, and more separation if possible from the hicap dr.

Thanks in advance

Scott

The HCDR on the SN will be a notable change versus the Flatcap. Faster attack and bass grip with a blacker background and more refinement. Definitely better for hi-fi aspects, but let your ears decide how it works for long-term musical enjoyment in your room.

Does a HCDR'd Aux2 beat a dedicated flatcap power supply on the prefix? Based on my trials with the SN2, HCDR, Flatcap and a Stageline, I'd say the a HCDR'd Aux2 is the way to go, but I tend to favor fewer boxes, power cords, and ICs in a system.

You're in a position to experiment with all the iterations, so my advice would be to try them and decide for yourself. A rule of thumb is a good starting point, but do your due diligence over extended listening sessions with a wide variety of music and don't be overly influenced by other folks' findings here. Go with your ears.

As a 'rule of thumb' the HCDR would go on the SN. But since you favour vinyl I'd try it on the Prefix, leaving the FC on the SN.

On your SuperNait - you will get a noticable benefit of the DR technology there.

Plesae note that the HiCap can only supply only one component at a time.

Hicap Dr on the SN1 is one of the best upgrades in the Naim world. You already have good sources, the SN1 will be on their level.

Imo a flatcap on a SN1 is a downgrade btw.

Thanks for your replies everyone, right now the HCDR is on Supernait with flatcap powering the prefix, and it seems to be the way to go. I have not tried aux power on Supernait to power the prefix yet, but fewer boxes does appeal to me for sure.

testing to resume soon.

I had a flatcap 2x and a non DR Hicap though with a 282 and supercap, I tried various arrangements and much prefered tthe Hicap on the 282 and the superline powered off AUX2. I still kept the flatcap as long as I still had a CD5x in the system but that’s all it powered.
