CD5xs won't read hybrid SACDs, and fluttering noises on some CDs
Posted by: Hui on 04 March 2018
Hi,
I recently bought a second-hard CD5xs, which is manufactured in 2016. Today when I played a standard CD I heard fluttering noised from both channels, tried a couple of other CDs they played fine. I then played one with the fluttering sound on my SACD player all is fine.
Secondly, I tried a few Hybrid SACDs from various brands and the player won't read most of them. For the ones it does ready (show time/track info) it also has the fluttering noise only much worse.
Is my unit defective?

If you mean dual layer SACDs, then all the Naim CD players I've had have read the CD layer without problems.
I'm not sure what you mean by the "fluttering" noise. It doesn't sound right. Was it Ok in the shop? I would get in touch with the dealer who sold it to you as it probably needs attention, maybe the mech?

Is the CD with the fluttering a proper Redbook standard CD ?
i.e. no copy protection?

The CD with fluttering noise is a standard RB commercial CD. I will try to get the player to my dealer and have it checked out. Before the CD5xs I have a CD5x, which once in a while also have these noise on certain CDs. But the not reading dual layer SACD disks really worries me.

For info Uniti Core reads dual layer hybrid SACD

I reset the CD player, and the noise seems to be gone (need to play more CDs to confirm), but still won't read dual layer discs.

Hui,
you could try a test on the mech by putting it into soak test mode; find a good clean CD without any scratches, place it in the CD try with the clamp in place. Close the tray. Switch off the CD5xs. Switch on while pressing and holding the play button. This would put the machine into soak mode. It will play the disc on repeat without error correction. Each error it finds it counts up to a max of 10 (at which point it stops). If the disc is perfect and it counts errors then it means the mech has an issue. If it plays all night and shows 0 errors then the mech may well be OK. However, it should play the CD layer of a dual-layer SACD...

Thanks, Richard. I'll give it a try tonight and report back.

Well, I ran the player in soak mode for about 40 minutes, and the display shows 5. I guess the mech indeed has problems. Thanks for the help!

OK Hui, that's fairly conclusive. The player needs attention from Naim service.
