555PS DR upgrade have bitten bullet
Posted by: Richieroo on 06 March 2018
Hi all have just taken my PSU for a mega upgrade ......... I hope ... It will deliver ..... the NDS sounds fantastic with the old 555ps ........ I am finding hard to imagine where it can improve ........ time will tell .... i will report back accordingly.
It's the palace which costs the real money to host the Orchestra.
Nah just a pit............
Someone's done it, take a look at Longborough Festival Opera.

OK have had a good session ... this is a superb upgrade ..... wonderful extra insitefull detail .... more boogie factor, more realism to voices and inflections and more accurate well timed bass .... superb. The treble quality is sublime.....the tiny pmc's never cease to amaze me.
Richieroo, have you updated your NDS to 4.6 firmware yet?
It produced a significant uplift, particularly in the areas you mention. This I believe was partly due to the untapped capabilities of my NDS/555 DR combo.
Hi Nigel ........... I am on the previous firmware.......... I thought 4.6 was all about 'multi room' .......... I would be totally gob-smacked if there are to be improvements to be had ..... wow I will try it when i have time.... thanks
4.6 was released to upgrade mutiroom capabilities, Tidal stability and also the DSP code was updated that does affect (improve) sound quality. After much faffing around (some had no problems) I have updated from 4.4 to 4.6 firmware on my NDS and have enjoyed a significant improvement in SQ. See the thread about 4.6 and SQ in the Streaming Forum.
Go to the Naim website and go to Customer Support and then Updates I think it is and you will see the download to get you started and the 4.6 update.
Well worth the effort IMHO.
OK great i am on 4.4 version at present .......... I will try the latest 4.6 and then give it a factory reset..........
Sorry to be so clueless, but can someone provide me with an idiots’ guide about how to update the NDS?

Naim's instructions are pretty good...
Thank you
Hi all... right...I installed 4.7 and I think there is an improvement....i am finding the bass is more defined and slightly deeper...the top end appears more open....the overall effect is in my case positive and even more musical...very pleased...thanks for you guys informing me.
4.7 !!! get set for a riot
Richieroo, I hope you mean 4.6. If I have to go through that agro again to install 4.7, I am not sure my ticker could take it!
Glad you are enjoying the upgrade. Just out of interest did you do a factory reset on your NDS after the update?
Whoops sorry 4.6.....
Sorry yeah did the full reset .... what I have noticed is that the very low sub base information and detail seems much improved and is more tuneful.....impressed. Although this upgrade has coincided with close behind the dr upgrade of 555ps....anyway all very very good. I will be interested to see how the ND555 could possibly improve things further.
555psdr is getting better and better. ... recordings are more open with greater detail ... delighted, the NDS now seems more analogue ... (in a good way) in presentation.
I too have a 555DR (for about 6 months now) and have updated to 4.6 like yourself. I believe the continued improvement you (and I) hear is of course the 555DR continuing to bed in but also due to the wonders of 4.6.
I thought, pre 4.6, that I had got the most out of the 555DR. Little did I know at that time there was far more to come from my NDS/555DR source. The 4.6 update seems to wring more detail, texture, deeper but firmer bass and simply a more musical (sorry, a very overused term I know) experience. All this with the unassuming 252DR/250DR. It goes to show what a belter of pre/power amp the 252DR/250DR is.
All this from some DSP coding. Amazing.
Totally agree ........ I played one track which I used shy away from (it came after a couple of belting tracks I love) - on a favorite CD rip and it totally blew me away .... the sound stage and vocalisation was stunning - it used to be flatter with less detail and not engaging - I am so impressed .... all of this from a streamer designed way back in 2010. If the ND555 can improve on this meaningfully I want to hear it......
Diverting the thread - excuse me guys - the Hi-Cap that powers my Superline came back at the weekend with the DR upgrade and fully serviced. From cold start-up clear improvement in clarity, noise level etc.
Regards,
Lindsay
Don't mind that's fine - hey glad you can hear an improvement from 'cold' things will only get better!!! keep us posted.
And the newly DR'd HiCap will continue to improve, Lindsay.
I was always a little sceptical about the value of DR on supplies when they were first announced. My dealer was always saying get as much of your system DR'd as possible which I have done in steps. I have to say my dealer was so right. Having a fully DR'd system seems to give more that the sum of the parts. A bit like a SuperLumina full loom.
Lindsay, you are not going to like the next comment. I have to say there also seems to be a synergy between DRing and SuperLumina'ing. I can completely understand why you might not want to get into the SuperLumina thing. Just saying, that's all.
Power supply really seams to have settled in now - I have to say it is a fantastic upgrade. With all the usual things that people say on this forum ....... but it is not until you hear the difference - it is quite staggering. Its like going from a mid range moving magnet cartridge to a really super moving coil. Highly recommended - thank you Naim.
Excellent news Richieroo. I too have added a 555PS DR. Added to my CDS3 in place of a power supply from the Middle East. Good upgrade for me which has also resulted in me moving the speakers further apart on recommendation from my desler.
Music through the system is even better than it was before...
