Using ethernet home/power-plugs for streaming

Posted by: caftan on 01 September 2011

Hi,

I am current using the above with one end connected to my router and the other end connected to a gigabit switch. The switch is connected to 2 devices, mainly the NDX and a mediabox stream/ player.

Questions: 1) Do you think by using the Ethernet home plug in the house will affect the sound quality of my gear even though they are not running on the same wall socket.

2) Is such network setup good enough for NDX?

Thanks.

I remember well, on holiday in the South of France many moons ago with my parents in a Motorhome which had a "legal" CB radio with (i think) two watts and switching it on and being amazed that I was able to communicate back to the UK. Even got a QSL card (is that right? Been a long time).

Happy days.

Yep, a QSL is a contact record card exchanged between stations.
I over heard a 'station' a couple of years ago at the top of a high-rise  in London using a quarter wave whip pushing against his metal balcony on the 10m amateur band (near the CB band) talking  to an amateur radio operator  in the canary islands  on 400mW. When conditions are good 10 watts will get you  heard in Australia from the UK  with reasonable antennas at both ends, it's a huge amount more energy efficient than the telephone or Internet, downside is the whole planet can hear you ;-)

I use TP-Link ethernet adapters to my PC and to my ND5XS and I can´t testify for them making the sound worse.

The sound is MUCH better than wireless and my vinyl-replay was EXACTLY the same when I had the ethernet adapters plugged in or off.

Even 24/192 - files (vinyl-rips) are replayed flawlessly.

So, I guess it depends...

Ah good old SSB

Back on topic - if you can't run Ethernet under floors etc, run the cable around an outside wall. I have 30m of CAT5 running between my lounge and study. It follows the route of my cable TV feed so it doesn't look out of place and hasn't detoriated with 4 years of UV exposure. As with Simon i wouldn't run Powerline adapters out of principle. Hopefully legislation will be introduced to stop the spread of these devices.

Music lover , you say the Pwerline adapters sounded the same when plugged in or not, unless they are Comtrend devices that pollute all the time, other chipsets only pollute and radiate significantly when transferring data such as streaming.

If you were curious, put a scope across the mains, or the output from a PSU transformer when you  transferring data. What do you see?  For many of us we go to some length to avoid that interference in our audio equipment. Another test... Transfer a file... Walk 20 metres from your house with a commercial SW radio. Do you hear a huge metallic buzzing sound? That is the RF that your house wiring is generating, and it so strong that it is transmitted  through the air. Your mains lead connecting your Naim equipment will be part of that transmitting antenna. If you have a sensitive revealing system significant RFI will cause intermod distortion, period. It will create a glass ceiling on your hifi expierience in terms of audio replay.

There is no "glass ceiling" over my audio-replay...and there is no distortion.

All is fine, thank you.

I will install a dedicated mains-spur for my rig any time soon.

Nope. I didn´t say that.

I said that in may system, I could not hear a difference in sound when the adapters are plugged in or not (vinyl- and USB-replay).

Also, I said that the replay WITH the adapters was much better than the same files on WLAN.

And frankly, I am pretty sick of too much worrying on the sound-quality...

I realized that especially NAIM-owners tend to overdo these things...cable-dressing, endless placing-issues...

I love the sound right now.

I don´t hear any distortions/disturbances.

I enjoy the music and I let others worry....

I do not intend to tarnish my bliss now by over-analytic listening in some endless exercise of lily-gillding. Quite content to listen to the music.

I am happy that my seemingly in-sensitive system is sensitive enough to transform the signal(s) into a wonderful glass-free sound.

Strange how some have had trouble wireless  and gone to home plugs. I Initially tried homeplugs but found they didn't work with hi res files. I then tried wireless, with no luck at all. After buying an airport extreme, wireless now works flawlessly, even with hi res.

I use an Apple Airport Extreme and find it just works. I can bridge between one upstairs and one downstairs. That way when the NDS turns up I can plug it in to the same wired LAN as the Vortexbox.

I'm not a fan of Ethernet over Mains.

Music lover, sorry I didn't mean to antagonise you. You are right, it's all about sounds good and pleasing to you, you can get obsessive. It's just I could hear the effect of Powerline adapters on my radio and they weren't even in  my house, they were 300 yards away elsewhere in my village. I had to resort to Ofcom and many vists and radio detection finding by thier field operative to locate them and have them powered off, they were Comtrend devices that were resonatingover suspended /overhead Power lines, that were then also knocking back my ADSL. I don't want to go through that again, hence why I am quite anti.. and learnt an awfull lot about RFI intermodulation artefacts in audio circuits, especially phono and high impedance circuits in the process.

Simon, no problem.

Just tonight, a good friend of me and myself enjoyed a very nice listening session where the music counted.

He too did not hear any disturbance.

I am sure it is not the best solution, but I don´t want wireless and until I have a dedicated spur, all is fine.

Thank u for the insights.
