Chinese Radio interference

Posted by: overprint on 10 March 2018

Had a weird thing happen around 2am this morning in UK.  Was listening to LP12 and whilst changing LP sides, could hear voices through speakers. Turn up t’52 and some chinese radio station (in english) very noticeable coming through. Half hour later, gone. Bit later back again. Didn’t alter anything my end.

Err - what? Any remedies anyone? Other inputs not affected so is Lingo 1 the culprit?  (was serviced in 2017)

It won't be the Lingo as that just powers the LP12 motor. It will most likely the phono stage in the pre-amp picking up RF. It may be work checking your phono leads or rerouting.

I think Naim can supply RF kits if the problems persists or is troublesome.

Are you using a Superline? - as several of us here have had radio interference issues with this kit, and the cures appear to be varied e.g. disconnect the earth lead from the LP12, get the dealer to check the earthing inside the deck, disconnect things like plasma TVs from the pre-amp, change the capacitance on the SL. In other words, get your tweaking hat on!

My issues (with a SL) were most prevalent in the evening and late at night - more Radio Belgrade or somesuch.

Yeah - I used to hear taxis through the phono input - big nuisance living near an airport. Fiddling with wires cured it.

Radio breakthrough (not be confused with RFI) on the SW bands, probably around 7.2 MHz or so... and coincides with ionospheric propagation which will be apparent at only certain times of the day and year... and indeed will vary with the 11 year sun spot cycle, and the flow of cycles themselves.... So with all those variables it might well be very occasional and intermittent.

It comes, most likely, from your cartridge, cartridge cable and phono amp input circuit acting as a tuned circuit with a resonance near the radio station frequency. To me this suggests poor impedance alignment between cartridge and phono amp, but is quite common seemingly with audiophile  phono preamps... the cure ... you can change the length or shape of your cartridge interconnect and  you can double check the phono cartridge shield screening is intact with earth. Also you can try changing the phono amp impedance by adding or removing some capacitance... however  this last step will likely only adjust the resonance or ‘tuning’ of the cartridge tuned circuit..so you might simply hear another station instead  !

Thanks everyone so far. I have a Prefix plus a Krystal cartridge. Nothing has changed at my end recently but I’ll twiddle a cable or two tonight if it re-occurs

No help I'm afraid, but my first thought was 'what a fabulous name for a band'.

Chinese Radio Interference

Hope you got it sorted.

John.

Next time you catch a Chinese station, since it's English speaking, try to understand if they are going to buy Naim.

It could also be turned into a TV series: C.R.I. (Salisbury, New York, L.A...). Or into a single thriller: a man casually gets speeches from his cartridge and phono stage and realizes it's sensible, political stuff. Since that, it's all car chases between black BMWs (the villains) and Mercedeses (the Goods) in some fake Vienna, destroying coffee tables and market stalls.
