Uniti Core Ripping / Editing Questions
Posted by: Spookyfoot on 11 March 2018
Is it ok to play files and listen to music through the Core while I'm also ripping a different disc (doing two tasks at once)? Any insight as to if this slows down the ripping process or perhaps could cause ripping errors? Just want to make sure the Core was built to listen to files I've already ripped while also ripping discs and I'm not compromising or stressing the unit in any way. My old server I've been using the past 6 years (Olive 04-HD) this was not a good idea.
Also when I rip a CD-R disc and go to edit the metadata there is only a place to edit the name of the track and only the one place to enter the artist but if my CD is full of different artists I don't see a way to edit that properly...other than in the track title also list the artist. Is this what you all do as well? I am using the Naim app through my old Apple 5-S phone.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Can only help you with the first question. Core happily rips while playing music already ripped and stored.
As Gazza says, no problem to have the Core doing multiple different things at the same time and in particular this doesn't introduce ripping errors. I don't know for sure if it slows down the ripping process or not but I would be very surprised if it did to any appreciable extent.
And to the second question, this isn't a CD-R issue, it's how the Core's metadata structure and editing capability has been designed to be. You will find the same problem with any compilation CD (unless I have misunderstood the question).

To the second question, the current Core firmware for editing metadata only supports title, album artist, track names, artwork and genre.

That was a shortcoming of the old Naim servers, and one that Naim presumably don't see as a problem, as it wasn't changed for the new servers, as you have discovered. It's a PITA if you have any compilation albums, where every artist is just listed as 'Various'.

It certainly is. If the artists are listed separately for each track you can convert the album to a playlist for easier listening.
I'm really surprised it has this limitation, my Olive 04HD is six years old and can do it easily.

It's not difficult to do. It's just that Naim chose not to allow or enable it.
There are a number of things that the Core currently won't do that previous servers did, like transcoding on the fly for example. These are design choices that Naim made, for whatever reason.

I've got a question about ripping CDs to my Core. Sorry if this is the wrong forum. Why is it that some CDs can't be read by the Core, yet when I import them into my iMac with the Superdrive (I think that's what it's called), there's no problem at all reading the disc? I then drag and drop the disc on the iMac into the downloads folder of the Core.

My experience is that the Core will recognise almost all my CDs as CDs and read them, but doesn't always find any metadata and rarely it reads a disc with some errors.
Obviously your CDs are different to mine, but unless they are very dirty or damaged I would expect yout Core to be able to read yours.
There has been some discussion here about Naim's response to a forum member who sent in to them a heap of CDs his Core couldn't read and eventually they responded that the type of optical drive used in the Core had limitations compared with some higher spec optical drives.
A way of telling whether your optical drive in your Core is faulty would be to take the CDs that it won't read to your dealer or another Naim owner who has a Core and see what happens. Obviously you have a work around of ripping on your PC and maybe you are happy with that. Personally if I was regularly seeing that the Core couldn't read at all a completely new CD, then I would be wanting Naim to repair or replace my Core.

David - thanks for your input. I don't usually have any problems reading a new CD. It's usually when I'm trying to rip a used CD that I run into problems, even on discs that do not look particularly used or worn. Of course I clean all of them before ripping.
Most of the CDs I buy are used, and ripping them on a Unitiserve is hardly ever a problem. I've never bothered to clean them first. What do you use to clean them?
On the very rare occasions when it has been unable to rip a CD, I've found, like you, that a Mac will do the job. If this is happening regularly, I would get your dealer involved - maybe take some problem CDs and see if they will rip in his demo Core?
Adding my 2p
I've had my Core for a year and out of about 100 CDs, some dating back to 1983, only four have failed to rip successfully, one with some bad tracks which could not be ripped or played properly on any system, one which the Core could not recognise (before metadata editing was added), one with a very short track which the Core omitted, and one SACD which would not rip to completion. The rest ripped without issues and in most cases, I don't edit the metadata.
