Sad news to wake up to.What an amazing brain he had and what a contribution he made to science.

R.I.P Stephen.

Certainly a case of mind over matter, sheer brilliance and persevering over his physical problems. A one off, and great loss to science.

And a great sense of humour too. LBC radio recently played a snippet of him in the Simpsons cartoon program.

I feel the world's average intelligence dropped a notch or two this morning; and the determination of the world certainly has.

Yes his humour forgot about the appearances in the Big Bang theory too...what a legacy.

And don't forget (amongst others) appearances in the Simpsons and Star Trek: The Next Generation as well as his contributions to Pink Floyd...

Yes.

His contribution to science fiction was immense, where would we be without space time continuum and warp drive.

I respectfully refer you also to my Hitchhiker’s thread...

Overrated?

And poor timing on Jim Bowen's part. Yesterday he'd have been referenced with Ken Dodd. Whereas today...

Can I respectfully ask you to clarify what you are meaning here?

Well Astro-physics can't be that hard, even that girl from D:Ream got quite good at it in the end.

Steve Hawking has become one of our truly great scientists that I’m sure will be remembered and revered for centuries to come... a true inspiration and icon, who luckily far outlived his initial expected life expectancy who made a huge  contribution to science  and encouraged the accessibility of physics.

The media love to glamourise prominent scientists, along with countless other 'personalities', but I think SH rose above this. He wasn't afraid of speaking up on issues like the way in which we are destroying the planet, in a similar vein to David Attenborough. His real achievements, though, were not in popularising science, but in proper scientific research that is way beyond the understanding of virtually everybody.

Thank You Sir!

Rest in Peace!

R.I.P. Stephen Hawking.

Either I don't get it or it's just not funny.

Perhaps it needs explaining to me and if it has to be explained usually means the jokes not funny.

Today is Albert Einstein’s birthday. Stephen Hawking is in heaven, wishing Einstein happy birthday.

Many years ago when I moved to Cambridge, I lived in a shared house with a few people who studied science and maths at one of the Cambridge universities that he resided. During the holidays they would spend the days caring for him, as he enjoyed more the company of young inquisitive minded folk rather than his usual. Paid good money for it.

Would two obviously rational men of science believe in heaven?

Probably asking god right now wether he/she/it really knows everything.
