Flac Radio Paradise on Unityqute internet radio

Posted by: Mike McDonald on 14 March 2018

Hi,

I've been able to get the FLAC stream of Radio Paradise on it's own app, but does anyone know if it's possible to locate this stream on the Unityqute?

Thanks, Mike

You can't get it from the iRadio input, and it's unlikely the this will ever be possible. What you could do is put an Airport Express near your UQ and connect it with an optical cable, then stream it via Airplay. It's also possible to stream it via LMS. If you have a Synology NAS, you can put LMS on it, and instal a Radio Paradise plugin, then send it to the UQ over your network. This is a bit of a faff to set up, but works quite well once you've done it.

Finally, the simplest option is to connect an iPhone/iPad to the USB input, and play it through that. So there are a few possible workarounds for you!

Hi ChrisSU

How did you make it work. I have installed the plug-in (I think) very recently but it seems to not be the radio stream - more a selection service - but with no content bar the one track that is first loaded (never the same as what is current on the radio stream). I have LMS 7.9 running on an iMac and I have a SqzB Duet. RP is working fine in its normal 320 CBR mp3 expanded to 702 Flac mode (I’ve had this for quite some time - just in case this actually is the Flac stream).

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Alan

Yes, they have recently developed a FLAC stream, available from their own apps, but you can’t get it from a regular iRadio input on a streamer.

Thanks guys. I shall connect my iPhone via the front USB input, listen from the Flac app, and compare it to the iradio preset, and let my ears decide.

As always, thanks for your help, Mike.

The USB inputs on the current Uniti range will not play an iphone or ipad but perhaps the older Qute will be ok, I know my Muso worked so I was surprised when i tried the Atom and no joy, Naim confirmed this is correct

What a shame you can’t get radio paradise in FLAC through iRadio. Is there no way this can be made possible?

Works fine for me, using iPhone 6 into Atom front USB input. On the new Unitis you can also use Airplay.

Strange, just tried mine again now back & front and nothing, I mailed Naim about this a good while ago and they confirmed that it won’t work, can’t remember the exact reason but something to do with the type of usb, memory sticks are fine so I know the ports work and it’ll charge my phone or pad ok but won’t play, AirPlay is fine though and i use that for RP Flac

Not in the foreseeable future, as RP cannot provide a URL. There are various workaround solutions that will work, albeit not as neat as it would be via the iRadio input.

Alan, I managed to get it working with LMS on a Synology NAS, but to be honest, after a couple of attempts, I had all but given up. Then I had another go, and managed to get it working, but by that time I'd done so much trial and error that I doubt I'd be able to repeat it! I'm not quite sure if other devices, such as your Mac, will work the same.

Once I'd got it working, LMS appeared as a server in the UPnP input, but you can't control it from there - you do that from the LMS page in a browser. UPnP streamers should appear in a dropdown list in the top R corner.

I think you're looking at the regular MP3 stream.

How did you get the flac stream to work on the uniti?

When i plug in my iPhone 6 into the front usb of my SU. Straightaway i see albums, artists, songs, playlists on the SU screen. I am playing the flac stream on the iPhone but nothing is happening with the SU. I don't get any sound.

Sometimes you have to 'fool' the streamer into seeing the FLAC stream. Start by playing something from the Apple Music app, which is officially supported by Naim streamers, and should work. Then switch to the RP app, and it should play. After you're done this once, it usually works straight away next time.

Thanks ChrisSU, much appreciated!!!!

It works, but I can't tell if the flac stream from the iPhone is better than the 320k mp3 that comes directly from the SU.

Can you hear a difference?

Thanks

The mp3 stream on iRadio sounds pretty good to me. I’d be interested if anyone can hear a discernible difference.

Posted on: 16 March 2018 by ChrisSU

I do think the FLAC stream sounds better, although the 320 stream isn't bad. Maybe the built-in iRadio implementation gives it an advantage? I think the LMS stream, which I'm playing from a Synology NAS, is probably better than FLAC via USB, but to be honest, I haven't compared them extensively, so maybe don't take my comparisons too seriously!

I've also tried it with LMS on my Synology NAS & although the SQ is better than the already very excellent & simple Naim app iRadio (vTuner) AAC 320kb/s,  it's a faff to get it up & running & as I tend to use RP for casual listening,  the faff factor vs the slightly better SQ did not swing it for me.

Posted on: 16 March 2018 by meni48

I did it through my iPhone I see it as flac, but the sound is less good even bad than mp3 320 through my regular naim ap, I think you don’t get a true flac streaming, the dac into nds doesn’t recognize the format.

Posted on: 16 March 2018 by meni48

I didn’t know but now I realized that I need to change to flac into rp setting and now it sound better
