New Nova Owner's

Posted by: Freedomsounds on 15 March 2018

Hi Everyone, I am finally a new Nova owner & first time Naim user. It is a beautiful piece of machinery & even at this early stage it sounds great ! I did notice after some hours of playing Miles Davis Blue in Green  (off of the rear USB) that the Nova seemed to sound a little louder & also a little more detail as time moved on. I am useing a pair of older 7 meter NACA5s on loan as demo for now. They have not been use in a while, so I guess reburn-in is emanate. I know there is going to be a learning curve being a Naim newbie, so I have a few newbie questions for you :

1. I noticed the favorites button on the face of the unit. Can it be used to creating a favorites list from an incerted USB stick ? Or any other incerted device ? The only thing it seemed to worked for is the pre-loaded internet radio apps from naim. When I tried to add a collage station to the favorites list, it kept returning back to the naim radio app. Just wondering if I am doing something wrong, or is it the way favorites is set up ? Just for certain in-house radio apps ?

2. I noticed that when i incerted the Memory Card into its slot with music on it, I could not access any of the data and there was no input on the remote or iPad that was labeled Memory Card. So I am just wondering is it actually falls under one of the digital inputs ? or does it the Memory Slot have a different function ? I hope I don't sound to computer illiterate here to some of you  ! Lol. But I'm no techie, just trying to learn.

3. Does the Nova always stay in standby mode (with the power button still illuminated) when you power down ? Or is there another step I am missing ?

Thanks for now, I know I will have more questions moving forward Peace

That is what I have been trying to do, get extra hours of Run-in time, but the unit shuts down eventually.

I have a question, has anyone had a problem with the Nova once left on internet radio for a number of hours the unit randomly powering down ? This has been happening consistently. So, I am trying to figuring out if it is inherent or something I’m doing wrong ?

check the standby time in the app setting but it shouldent affect it if the radio is running I would have thought

To be honest, it does feel like there is a stand by & that is what I was wondering, will check it . Thanks

The auto standby will turn it off regardless if something is playing. Its not what you think it should be. It's more a sleep feature not a turn it off if not in use thing  Turn it off completely and the unit should stay on. I had this issue and asked support about it .

Thank you Simon that’s clears up my question about the issue. ✌️

Hmm well I just went out for 2 hours leaving tidal playing, standby in app set to 20 mins, still playing on my return

Posted on: 29 March 2018 by SimonPeterArnold

That's what support told me as it kept turning off when i got it. Annoyed the hell out me.

I hear ya

At  different times I have had the same thing happen. today, I left it running for a few hour with a usb stick while I stepped out and when I came back it was still running and everything was fine. But then when I back internet radio it would not boot up. I will say I am getting kinda frustrated.

Is there a reset setting on the Nova to return all of its settings to (out of box new) settings ? I am just wondering if resetting the unit will bring it back to normal, the way it was the first week, when it seemed to be working properly.

Posted on: 29 March 2018 by Gazza

Nearest thing to a reset is to unplug and then restart.....but firmware does not change

Thanks

Or as per my original note talk to your dealer who should be able to talk you through the issue and then contact Naim on your behalf. I did this as I as trying to play the Core via Spdif from Nova......you can only do that for Upnp, my mistake easily sorted.

You can reset to factory settings, but the firmware doesn't change, as Gazza says. However it does sometimes get rid of strange behaviour. And it is like out of the box for current production that will ship with the latest firmware.

I don't have a Nova, so can't talk you through the exact procedure, but in another thread a day or so back this was mentioned and that said you use the front panel buttons to navigate to setup, about, and then factory reset (or words to that effect). You have to then set it up again including pairing the remote.

best

Thanks again to all you guys and I will try again tonight.

Use the remote to navigate the home screen on nova using the arrows on remote and select settings with the centre button of remote, the one between all 4 arrows. Factory settings is the 4 th setting, press remote to select and you can reset, update etc

Thanks Gazza ✌️

The reset seems for now to have calmed it back down close to normal.  Thanks fellows

Has anyone had problems with the remote working after resetting nova to factory settings ? The remote lites up, but none of the functions work. Weather you use it up close or far away . When I paired it yesterday it worked, but after that no connection. Useing the pad to control as much as I can now.

I owned a Nova for a while when it first came out.  However, no matter what I did, I simply could not pair the remote with the Nova.  My dealer gave me a new remote to try - nothing.  I ended up returning the Nova and got a 272, 250DR and Core instead.

Called naim support yesterday & they ironed out my remote problems, so the nova is back to normal. Thanks.

Would like to know if anyone here has a REL sub  connected to a Nova ??? If so, I would like to know how you connected it to the nova ? If you can bypass the rca inputs on the nova and use the speakon cable. I noticed that Rel does make a higher end cable that has been modified for use with older naim amps that have clamps on the wired end that can be used. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this. Support had very  little say on the matter.would love to get some feedback on this. Thanks

Hi Freedomsounds,

I don't know if you already have gotten more knowledge about the Nova?

If you want to favorite a song from a USB attached storage device you should enter the "servers" input and select the song you want, then you can add it as favorite in the app. You can't enter them with the favorites button on the frontpanel.

For Music on a SD memory card. You can go to the "servers" or "USB" input. In the USB input menu is the SD slot only visible when there is a SD card inserted.

Enjoy!

No,I did not have the information you mentioned. I will try it tonight. Thank you !

By the way, you would not happen to know anything about the naim standard of  connecting a rel sub via speakon high level output ? I posted, but no one answered. I guess there are not many people running subs with 2 channel systems with naim  again thanks !

Freedomsounds, with Naim and REL, where a speaker level input is the norm,  you need to connect the sub to the speaker end, not the amp end. This applied even to the NAIT 5i (poor performance and other issues could otherwise occur), so I'd imagine it also applies to the Unitis as well.  Only trouble is you can't use the standard REL lead.  You'll need a custom one made up as there's usually quite a bit off distance between the speakers. REL used to supply a pdf on this for Naim owners.  The cabling can be quite thin and no need for anything fancy. Your dealer should be able to make something up.
