New Nova Owner's
Posted by: Freedomsounds on 15 March 2018
Hi Everyone, I am finally a new Nova owner & first time Naim user. It is a beautiful piece of machinery & even at this early stage it sounds great ! I did notice after some hours of playing Miles Davis Blue in Green (off of the rear USB) that the Nova seemed to sound a little louder & also a little more detail as time moved on. I am useing a pair of older 7 meter NACA5s on loan as demo for now. They have not been use in a while, so I guess reburn-in is emanate. I know there is going to be a learning curve being a Naim newbie, so I have a few newbie questions for you :
1. I noticed the favorites button on the face of the unit. Can it be used to creating a favorites list from an incerted USB stick ? Or any other incerted device ? The only thing it seemed to worked for is the pre-loaded internet radio apps from naim. When I tried to add a collage station to the favorites list, it kept returning back to the naim radio app. Just wondering if I am doing something wrong, or is it the way favorites is set up ? Just for certain in-house radio apps ?
2. I noticed that when i incerted the Memory Card into its slot with music on it, I could not access any of the data and there was no input on the remote or iPad that was labeled Memory Card. So I am just wondering is it actually falls under one of the digital inputs ? or does it the Memory Slot have a different function ? I hope I don't sound to computer illiterate here to some of you ! Lol. But I'm no techie, just trying to learn.
3. Does the Nova always stay in standby mode (with the power button still illuminated) when you power down ? Or is there another step I am missing ?
Thanks for now, I know I will have more questions moving forward Peace

No,I did not have the information you mentioned. I will try it tonight. Thank you !
By the way, you would not happen to know anything about the naim standard of connecting a rel sub via speakon high level output ? I posted, but no one answered. I guess there are not many people running subs with 2 channel systems with naim again thanks !
No, i do not. My Nova drives a pair Kef LS50's and there is definitely no need for a sub!
I do noticed with the previous firmware (2.3.1.9464) in the "audio setup" a selectable "line out" to change to Din, RCA or both and a "digital out" or "digital DSD out". but these settings are gone now and since i don't use the outputs i had no chance to test that. (i have made a feedback message about this)

Hi,
Also a Naim Nova first timer. I just wonder if there is any visible difference between the standby and power off mode? In both cases the standby button seems to light up?

Hi Fred, I’m not 100% sure& there are others on here that know for sure , but I was told, that if you hold the power button down for longer than a moment that the nova will completely power down. Hope that helps.

This just puts the Nova into a deeper sleep - it will no longer respond to the network (so can’t be used as a server or be turned on by the app). The light on the power button will be dimmer. It will still be in standby - to power off fully you’ll need to remove the mains plug I believe.
Also turning on won’t be instant - you’ll hear relays switching and see the “flames” screen.

on my Nova I did some energy checks:
Deep sleep. 1.1 watt /h
Standby. 2.2 watt /h
Standby + Server Mode. 20,6 / 21,6 watt/ h. !!!
So 1 year Standby + Server Mode is the same as 10 years normal Standby.

Mr. Orange,
Watt/hr is a non-existing unit of measure. You probably mean Watt (like 40W/60W you see on a lightbulb)?

Called naim support yesterday & they ironed out my remote problems, so the nova is back to normal. Thanks.
Hi @freedonsounds, what did support do to iron your remote problem?

No difference whatsoever. In fact, I don't believe holding power button would switch it off completely. Some claimed that this will bring it to deeper sleep. That's all.

At different times I have had the same thing happen. today, I left it running for a few hour with a usb stick while I stepped out and when I came back it was still running and everything was fine. But then when I back internet radio it would not boot up. I will say I am getting kinda frustrated.
Standby is not meant to take the Nova to sleep while there is something playing. It only goes to sleep when there is no signal. Before v2.6 firmware update, some experienced this auto standby while playing SPIF etc and v2.6 firmware supposed to fix this. I haven't had any problem anymore after the update. Support did suggest also turn off standby and set it to never go to sleep.

Thanks Gazza, I have a new (few years old) Sony and have a sound bar running though one of the hdmi’s that works fine ! Will play with it a little more before placing a complaint.
I don't have a Sony but a Samsung TV, using AnyNet+ and HDMI ARC work perfectly. Just make sure you use PCM and set TV to use HDMI ARC or whatever it is called for your TV. Nova doesn't have multichannel processor so must be 2 ch PCM.

If it's energy he is measuring, as he says he is, rather than power - then the unit is watt hour rather than watt or watt/hour....
But he would need to specify the measurement period and I agree more normally one would compare power consumption ( in watts) rather than energy consumption (in watt hours).

Mr. Orange,
Watt/hr is a non-existing unit of measure.
Try telling my electricity supplier that!!
Posted on: 23 April 2018 by audio1946
electrical energy is calculated watt/hours normally in kW/HRS 1 UNIT=kW/HR UNIT OF POWER IS THE WATT
Posted on: 23 April 2018 by David Hendon
No really the unit of energy is not kw/hour its kW-hour. If it were kW/hour, the answer would be less energy the more hours, which while attractive to contemplate is plainly absurd!

Watch it Mr Blonde, or you’ll be in trouble

With the remote, the best way to pair it is press the home button first before you get close to the face of the nova, then use the back of the remote, where the battery’s go & put that end up to the face of the mova and is should pair. It may take a few try’s .

Hi Folks, Just picked-up my Core to go with Nova today ! One thing I have noticed when I went to get an Samsung SSD for it is that the 850 EVO has been discontinued and updated to the 860 EVO. The question I have is the new 860 (which is basically just a updated version of the 850 EVO) been recommend by Naim yet ??? And does it make any difference between the two ??? If someone could let me know, I would really appreciate it.! Thanks !

Amazon still have some 1 Tb 850 ssd available, would think the 860 is fine, just call Naim if not sure.
Posted on: 06 May 2018 by Richard Dane
I think the 850 and 860 are close enough for the latter to be a safe substitute for the former. AFAIK the main difference is that Samsung have extended the guaranteed TBW (Terrabytes written) . However, note that most SSDs have been found to hugely exceed their rated TBWs, so I wouldn't get too excited. Only thing I have been advised on SSDs is for best performance not to run them too full, so go for higher capacity than you think you want or need.

Thank you Gazza & Richard Dane for your support !

Simple problem, I am running the Nova & Core via UpNp. Once I rip to on the Core, can’t seem to play what I’ve ripped via the Nova. Should this function of playing what’s on the Core though the Nova happen automatically wirelessly ? And also be controlled from the app ? The network light on the back of the Core is on solid green, but there is also a yellow light that is also a yellow light that is blanking on the back of the Core ? Does this mean the Core hasn’t been configured to connect with the Nova ? Thanks

You have to select the thing you want to play in the upnp screen of Nova in the app. If you tell it to play in the Core scection of the app, it plays only by the s/pdif connection on the Core, which you aren't using.
You don't have to configure anything for the Nova and Core to work together on upnp . It's all automatic as long as both can see your network.

Thanks, just curious ! What happened it you use s/pdif between the Core and the Nova ? Could it be better quality wise ?
