New Nova Owner's

Posted by: Freedomsounds on 15 March 2018

Hi Everyone, I am finally a new Nova owner & first time Naim user. It is a beautiful piece of machinery & even at this early stage it sounds great ! I did notice after some hours of playing Miles Davis Blue in Green  (off of the rear USB) that the Nova seemed to sound a little louder & also a little more detail as time moved on. I am useing a pair of older 7 meter NACA5s on loan as demo for now. They have not been use in a while, so I guess reburn-in is emanate. I know there is going to be a learning curve being a Naim newbie, so I have a few newbie questions for you :

1. I noticed the favorites button on the face of the unit. Can it be used to creating a favorites list from an incerted USB stick ? Or any other incerted device ? The only thing it seemed to worked for is the pre-loaded internet radio apps from naim. When I tried to add a collage station to the favorites list, it kept returning back to the naim radio app. Just wondering if I am doing something wrong, or is it the way favorites is set up ? Just for certain in-house radio apps ?

2. I noticed that when i incerted the Memory Card into its slot with music on it, I could not access any of the data and there was no input on the remote or iPad that was labeled Memory Card. So I am just wondering is it actually falls under one of the digital inputs ? or does it the Memory Slot have a different function ? I hope I don't sound to computer illiterate here to some of you  ! Lol. But I'm no techie, just trying to learn.

3. Does the Nova always stay in standby mode (with the power button still illuminated) when you power down ? Or is there another step I am missing ?

Thanks for now, I know I will have more questions moving forward Peace

I think the 850 and 860 are close enough for the latter to be a safe substitute for the former.  AFAIK the main difference is that Samsung have extended the guaranteed TBW (Terrabytes written) . However, note that most SSDs have been found to hugely exceed their rated TBWs, so I wouldn't get too excited. Only thing I have been advised on SSDs is for best performance not to run them too full, so go for higher capacity than you think you want or need.

Hi Richard,

Can you confirm that this is the product you have suggested?

Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" SATA III 4TB Internal SSD (MZ-76E4T0B/AM)

Thanks, just curious !  What happened it you use s/pdif between the Core and the Nova  ?  Could it be better quality wise ?

There is no definite agreement on whether it sounds better connecting by upnp or by s/pdif. But I have seen posts by people strongly preferring one over the other. You can give it a try quite easily! If you do decide to try s/pdif then of course you have to select the music to play from the Core by looking at that part of the app, having selected whichever digital input you are using with the Nova part of the app first of course.

Freedomsounds.......I did try some Spdif cables including a Naim DC1, True audiosignal, and the belden. At first I had the preference over Upnp, then I put in a Cisco switch with Melco Ethernet cables and the Upnp is better. It’s also more convenient to play from, and you get the album artwork.

I think that should be fine.

About the yellow light that is blanking on the Core’s Network input, is that a sign that there is  is no Signal  ? The green light next to yellow is on. Just trying to figure this out ?

My Core is not here with me right now, so I cant check but I think that the green light means the connection is working properly and the orange light means data is being transferred. So it blinks. But maybe another Core owner can say what their's is doing.

Called naim support yesterday & they ironed out my remote problems, so the nova is back to normal. Thanks.

Would like to know if anyone here has a REL sub  connected to a Nova ??? If so, I would like to know how you connected it to the nova ? If you can bypass the rca inputs on the nova and use the speakon cable. I noticed that Rel does make a higher end cable that has been modified for use with older naim amps that have clamps on the wired end that can be used. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this. Support had very  little say on the matter.would love to get some feedback on this. Thanks

Freedomsounds,

What seems to be the problem with the remote? And did they tell you ( I assume) how to fix it.?

Fred, I don’t think I had a problem with the remote. It just was not parring. The one thing the tech told me that made the difference is that when parring use the battery end of the remote.  So, after you press down the home button on the remote getting ready to pare, put the battery end of the remote up to the face of the nova instead of the end where the power button is. And that should do it. It may take a few try’s or may happen on the first try. The tech said the reason this way is better, is because the sencer is at the battery end of the remote. Hope this helps !

Question, I noticed all the redbox are ripping at 16 bit which i expected. But does the Core rip files to 24 bit ? And if so, how do you go about this ?

Posted on: 15 May 2018 by Richard Dane

The Core rips CDs, which are 16bit.  If you wish to rip 24bit files (these are usually only found on DAD, DVD-A, or Blu-Ray discs), or perhaps rip an HDCD encoded CD to take advantage of the 20bit encoding, then you'll need appropriate software loaded on your computer and a drive that can read such discs. Once ripped into files and put within a folder with metadata and album art, these can be added to the Core via external USB storage.

Thank you for your quick reply Richard

Had my first cover freeze on the Nova because of the Error flaw or flaws from a Core rip. The would not unfreeze after numerous try’s of trying to power the nova down, I had to disconnect the power cable. My guess is that Freezes have to do with a flawed discs ripped on the Core ?

Posted on: 16 May 2018 by Freedomsounds

Hey Richard, what’s your thoughts on getting a on haveing cover art freeze on a nova from a rip on a core ?

Posted on: 16 May 2018 by Richard Dane

I've never come across such a thing, but then I don't use a Nova.  Do you mean that the cover art freezes in the App or actually on the Nova itself?

if you want to power down the Nova, you have to put it into deep sleep by a long press of the standby button. Otherwise much of it is still powered up. Pulling the plug out is a way to completely start from scratch.

Cover art freezes are nothing to do with flawed discs ripped on the Core. If the disc has faults on it, the Core works around that and you might hear very short discontinuities in the sound or some other aural effect but it won't affect the cover art and the Nova will get that from the Core regardless of whether or not there are errors.

I suggest you report the problem using the feedback facility in the app. If it happens a lot then you could call Naim support to see what they suggest. But if it's just occasionally then I suggest wait for a firmware update to fix it.

inciddntally did you try changing input on the Nova to something other than the Core? If so did the artwork then go away? And then come back again when you switched the Nova back to the Core?

This is a known problem and I know that Naim are aware of it. I spoke to Phil about it last year at Audio Show East.....and we still have not seen a fix, though mine is doing it much less.

Since firmware 6.1 the problem on my Nova is fixed.
