Road Sign Fun

Posted by: Mike-B on 20 March 2018

My local news has a story on road sign "vandalism".    Yes all very vandalish,  but they have bought a smile to a lot of peeps.  And I have to say that judging by the quality with matching fonts etc,  a lot of care has gone into making them.

TV Police say the vandals are still at large & should not be approached as they might make you laugh out loud.

The signs says it all.     If anyone needs a translation ......

The road sign is the name of a farm in NW Province, South Africa that I've passed by a few times.   Translated it means Two buffalo shot dead in one shot spring.   Or put another way,   the place with a water spring where someone killed two buffalo with one shot.     There is even a song about it.

Ha. I lived there for a while many moons ago and must have driven and cycled past that sign countless times.

The natives get shirty if it's referred to as Goth-um; it's pronounced Go-tum. Bumpkinsville is bang out of order too it transpires.

In Newfoundland. Might want to duck as you drive past. Then again, might be inclined to make that left and explore.

I do hope this is not an apocryphal story but lack any visual evidence

I believe a Welsh council sent a request for the correct translation to add to a road sign that needed to be bilingual.

They duly made up the sign with the reply that came back in Welsh. For some time the sign read 'We are Currently Out of the Office' until it was removed!

I always liked this one too

The story was on the Beeb 10 years ago.

Mis-translated bilingual road sign

How pleasing; it is true!

It reads

"I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated".

Thanks Bruce, I was on a conference call and didn't have  the chance to copy the picture. There are a couple of possibly apocryphal tales which I love and refuse to do a validity check on, as I'd rather believe them to be probably true than find out they're urban myths.

Sign above a Cash Dispenser in a petrol station in Tiverton, Devon. Just in case anyone using it has unrealistic expectations... Made me chuckle.

Just reading an article on the Independent (indy100) website about the sign "vandalism".

I love this quote from Oxfordshire County Council...

"We will investigate... as soon as the weather improves."

My most fond memory of a sign was in 1980. I went along to the local cinema in Fishguard to see Flash Gordon, above the door was a sign saying " you can't beat a good film" someone had crossed out the word film and replaced it with the word "shit", as a13 year old boy I thought this was hilarious, a few weeks later I went to the same cinema again with a friend who i had told about the special sign, the sign had been vandalised again the word "shit" being replaced by the word "wank".

Still makes me smile nearly 40 years later,

Karl
