Uniti CORE HD format issues - looking for some set-up expertise

Posted by: jGolf53 on 21 March 2018

The dealer that installed and set-up the hard-drive in my new CORE selected the wrong format, NTFS instead of HFS+ for my iMac Apple network.  I did not discover this until much later...and after I had ripped 1k CDs and as many file downloads from the network.  And after I had created a backup HD in HFS+ .  I now continually have quirky issues...i.e. a few time all music on the CORE disappeared and was un-retrievable and then returning a day or two later.  What are my options:  1) reformat the internal hard-drive - what are the implications of doing this?  Will I lose all of my music files and have to start over again? or 2) do nothing; I worry that the network and the CORE will become unstable; especially if I want to copy Apple Lossless files to the CORE via the network.  Are there other options?

Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.....

cheers,

jp

As usual one for David Hendon, if he cannot help or your dealer.......then it’s a call to Naim. David normally dips in each day and has a wonderful bedside manner as every Doctor..should.

I would copy all the files to an external disk (provided you can access the internal drive to perform the copying process) and then re-format it to a new file protocol.

Would FAT be an option for the CORE? It’s accesible to both Macs and Windows.

Good morning JGolf. David will put me right here if I’m wrong. The Core is essentially a 'posh' NAS so it doesn’t matter what format the internal Core drive uses, after all most NAS use ext 3 or 4, the fact that Core let’s you use NTFS is neither here nor there. I have a Core and if I remember correctly, the Core decided on the format. I assume you’re talking about being unable to 'see' your files in your Mac and also having issues finding them on the App. I had a problem initially with not 'seeing' my Downloads folder after a few days, also couldn’t play the music stored there, that’s the folder you must use when storing music downloads from the net. Core ripped CDs will automatically go into the Music folder in the internal drive. Luckily I had a back up! I can’t give you specific instructions for Mac 'cos I use Windows. Initially I contacted Naim help desk several times, they were very helpful and walked me through several non destructive options. It could be a network problem; Turn off all network appliances, Core, other NAS’s, network switch, router etc, disconnect network cables. Turn on and reconnect in the following order, waiting a few minutes each time to allow initialisation, so router first, then switch if fitted, Core, NAS, then other attached network appliances unfortunately none of this worked for me. The only way I could get going again was to do the following destructive reset, I should add that I’ve had no issues after carrying this out and installing my back up. Look up the following thread I started some time ago 'Problems opening downloads folder'
Problems opening downloads folder cured. To cut a long story short, Naim support walked me through several non destructive resetting options, non of which worked. I do have to thank support for their help and suggestions.
In the end I reformatted the drive simply by adding a new room Core in the add rooms settings. This over wrote the existing Core and allowed me to format. I then, because I could not 'see' either the Music or Downloads folders in Windows, unplugged the Core. On plugging the Core back in, pressed the Standby button for 5 seconds, this resets the network and I can now 'see' and open all folders using windows. I then ran Back up restore from the Naim app and all is well. Do not hold the Standby button in for much longer than 5 seconds when powering on because you’ll do a full reset which under certain circumstances can delete your music collection. The moral of the story is to ensure you have a back up of your music collection. Even with my backup it still took 4 hours to restore! I hope this helps anyone else who has problems opening or seeing the Music and Downloads folders in the future.
