Do you access music via a browser or app?

I MUCH prefer NOT having a laptop/computer in my living room. In years gone by I owned an NS01 and managed this by taking the vga output via an analogue digital convertor to my TV screen:

This was still a bit of a cludge as the Naim remote needed direct line of sight to the NS01 box. Having given long and valued service the NS01 died and was replaced by a Sonore microRendu; and so, back to using an aged Dell laptop that died last night. Whilst doing some research on what to replace it with it occurred to me that the answer might be .....nothing. My HiFi is co-located with my AV system, which includes a Fire TV. Owing to the turf was between Amazon and Google the Fire TV now has Firefox, could I use this to access the User Interface of mu Logitech Media Server?

In the event the answer was NO. The browser fails to resolve the IPort, but on checking I found that the FireTV has another browser, SILK; and, this one does work. As te remote is radio based no line of sight is required.

As the Fire TV is Android based there is a possibility that it may replace other devices you use, especially wireless ones if you have security concerns.

We prefer having no TV in our living room.  So it's an iPhone or iPad for running the Naim App and controlling the music.

Often times I have to, because the developers of Naim Android App are so f***ing incompetent that most of the time it won't connect to the media server (despite the developers having been told how to fix the problem).

They are so arrogant that they believe they know what's best for the users, even when the users tell them otherwise; Naim should just get shot of this lot as quickly as possible.

That leaves me using a generic UPnP render app on the tablet and a Chromecast to transmit to the 272 - despite the app being more far complex and developed by an individual in their spare time, at least it's reasonably reliable.

Hi Bart,

Yes, I get that.  In my case I have no access wirelessly to anything on the inside of my home LAN, and this just hadn't occurred to me as an obvious way forward; and, Apple are a company who I have done my best NOT to support for decades.

Can you really relax and enjoy listening to music with that big computery LMS screen dominating your field of vision? Some of us moan about the little screen on the new Naim streamers cos you can't turn it off!

Since installing a hologram strip inside the pocket of my posh iPad jacket, I have had no worries about not pulling out all the AV gear from the mains chain when critically listening.

Chris,

Once the playlist/album is ON the screen can go OFF.

Toby,

I had heard you were one of the early testers for the new Google Glasses 2.035 beta 5213 - which incude full senserama; another mole proves false.

As I have Roon for music i use their app for most of the brunt of audio duties plus Spotify and CA. Not having to use Naims awful app is a godsend especially being an android user. Before Roon I used LMS and orangesqueeze to control it. I tried using my shield TV as an endpoint and controller for a while but it's not practical and having to have the TV on to listen to music is a pain and distraction so apps are best for me.
