Spikes!

Hi Guy's - moving house on Wednesday, has anyone got any genius idea of something to put on the rack and speaker stand spikes for protection of them (an me while we move)?

Best

I would remove them and put them in a box.

George - Can't you just unscrew and remove them whilst transporting the kit ? They'll need adjusting when you put the racks and stands in the new place so you may as well just take them out now to make it easier to move things.

Good luck with the move

Cork from a wine bottle.

With the added advantage of having to drink at least  12 bottles of wine to get the corks (assuming 4 spike stands and one rack).

Absolutely. Don't trust the movers. Just box up everything and that should include removing of spikes and shelves from speakers and racks.

The OP doesn't have a system in their profile. But I'm assuming we are not talking about some exotic items with fixes spikes.

"genius idea" ....

.... how about applying some common sense?

.... apologies if that's not relevant advice

As others have advised, I would remove them.  Even if you're careful, there's the risk of blunting or bending a point, and then they're useless.

I can on the stands but not the rack - it was made custom. Thanks James.

Most of them are screw tops these day's  - that said on here I bet most of you buy your wine from Bibendum!

Hopefully the stand spikes are at least adjustable??

Either way, if they can't be removed then it's probably time to start drinking...*

*I would recommend champagne corks

wouldn't some blocks of polystyrene, secured with tape or cable ties perform a perfectly acceptable solution for minimal cost?

I know, as audiophiles, this low cost solution flies in the face of all we believe to be good but its got to be worth a go.........?

Bear in mind that if you box it up yourself, the movers won't accept liability for any damage in transit, even if you bribe them not to screw up ("buy insurance"). If you box it yourself, you might as well move the boxes yourself.

That’s what I did when move house many years ago.Packed up the hi-fi kits and placed all boxes in the car and leaved all household items to the mover.Job done!!

The same here a few weeks ago -- didn't trust the movers. Looking at what they did to the stainless steel fridge, it was a wise decision to move the hifi boxes myself...

Me too with everything but the NBLs, which, once in their boxes, were too big to go in the car, were left to the removal firm. Even then  my wife had to insist and insist again that they couldn't travel vertically and could not be stacked. She then observed them to ensure they did as she'd asked.

Well it's done! Half a cork on each, loads of masking tape, bubble wrapped and boxed. It's going in the car with the rest of the hi-fi, projector, camera, NAS drives, Canary IP cameras, iPads, MacBook, etc. I can't get the TV's in or the kids!

Thanks to all for the advice, fun and the permission to be Brahms & Liszt until Wednesday!

i may have been slightly foolish to miss the obvious advantage of using corks over polystyrene blocks......

I disagree CT, you were simply looking after the teetotalists. (If that's even a correct word).

Teetotalers.
