supercap non Dr vs supercap DR on 252 and superline

Posted by: Andib on 28 March 2018

Hi all,

today I bought a supercap DR and send you a quick report to interested ears.

my old system: 252+SC (non DR) / Superline+HCDR

home demoed: 252+SC (non DR) / Superline+SC (non DR)

own now: 252+SCDR, Superline+SC (non DR)

So I switched my old SC to my superline and put the new SCDR on the 252.

First of all: It's far better than expected. To me the two home demoed non DR SCs were from the start a no brainer. The Hicap DR perhaps is really good but in comparison to an old supercap for me the anwers is no question. I wanted to better my superline and my dealer only had an 8 year old non-DR SC. Just like mine at home on my 252. So I tried the two probably equal supercaps with my 252 and my superline. And was immediately convinced. Much more from everything! Really good!

Because of my only one year old 252 I decided to order the DR version. Today I can say: best decision ever! Since three hours I put all my loved vinyls on my dps and just love every song.

A new SCDR is not cheap. I thought about it a long time. But on the level of 252 in comparison to a non-dr version it really makes sense. Just to give you my impressions.

The supercap DR on the superline is also a no brainier

in the meantime I can’t help but wonder if the DR might be better placed on the superline as this is a more delicate stage of the amplification process ie lower signal voltage

Ok, I will try it (although my cdp then does not benefit). But isn't the nearly same age of the powered amps is a good reason to let the same aged play together? I now wonder how big the improvement will be in some weeks. Yesterday the SC was brand new, almost cold.. Any impressions about the burn in time of the SCDR?

Thanks - AndiB

Andi - documented on the Forum elsewhere but I recently replaced my non DR HC with a DR SC on my 282.  No comparison.   Like you I’ve put it on the pre amp so all 3 sources benefit.

I appreciate that with a Burndy it transforms the Superline but funds don’t stretch to everything!

Lindsay

I found the DR SC/Superline & NON DR SC/282 to be slightly superior to having the Non DR on the Superline. It wasn't a huge difference but as I play mainly Vinyl for serious listening I stuck with that.

From what I have heard before I would be inclined to put the Supercap DR on the Superline rather than the 252 IF vinyl is your only or heavily predominant source.

Slightly different pre-amp involved but I tried a SCDR and olive SC with my serviced 52 and a Superline.

The Superline/SCDR plus 52/olive SC combination was phenomenal.

The Superline/olive SC plus 52/SCDR was uninspiring. The music just disappeared.

Pure speculation, but perhaps this was down to fine tuning/voicing, with the 52 voiced for the SC (or 52PS) and the Superline developed to partner the SCDR.

However, this was with a 52 rather than a 252.

Best regards, FT

Thanks for the advises. After some days trial I put the SCDR now back to the 252. To my ears superior. Perhaps because of also using a dr nap!?

That’s interesting. I might swap mine over for another go. The last time I tried it was during a period of upgrading and I wasn’t so familiar with the sound of the system as a whole. It’s been stable for a few months now so any difference should be easier to attribute.
