Streaming issue with CCA / Qobuz

Posted by: HardBop on 29 March 2018

I hope someone may be able to help with a recent issue I'm having.

I have been using Chromecast Audio to cast streamed music from Qobuz using IPad to nDac. Router is connected via ethernet to Dac.  Been doing this for over a year with no major issues, and pleased with the results. However, recently changed routers from TP Link TD W8980 to a TalkTalk supplied D Link DSL 3782.

When I now try to stream from Qobuz, I get on many tracks (but not always) a short 1-2 second bit of music, then a pause for 1-2 seconds and then the track plays through to the end with no issues. Problem then repeats itself when the next track starts. This never happened with previous router. However, when I stream locally from my stored music on PC (using Plex Media Server) via CCA/IPad music plays as expected, no pauses.

What is of further interest is that I also have a Samsung Galaxy mobile and when I stream Qobuz via the Qobuz app. or through BubbleUpnp it plays correctly. One difference I noticed is that the track timer moves in 3 second jumps using Ipad with CCA/Qobuz, but not with locally streamed music. The timer also moves correctly with Samsung phone with CCA/Qobuz and local streaming. However, the 3 second jump has always been present since I started using CCA to stream Qobuz. I have also tried connecting IPad to NDac with USB and no breaks when streaming. Also tried casting wirelessly with CCA/Qobuz but breaks are present.

We did have initial problems with the new router, dropping out etc. but this was resolved with TalkTalk by changing one of the channels. No dropout since, and a little faster I think, but has not solved the breaks discussed above.

Obviously I can't be sure the router is to blame, but it sounds the likely culprit. Before I recontact TalkTalk I thought it worthwhile checking with the Forum for any thoughts/ideas. I still have the first router so it would be possible to reconnect and see, but hoping for a solution with the new router, as it's also now being used with the TalkTalk TV package.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have found Qobuz via Chromecast to be abit flaky on any device i have tried. Given up on it and use bubbleupnp instead. It's a shame as all other apps work flawlessly with Chromecast on my Atom just not this.

I would ensure that the new router is not blocking multicast traffic or it has IGMP snooping disabled as this can stop Chromecast from working.

It's not your router.

I've noticed exactly the same to my Nova since I updated the Qobuz app on iPhone about 10 days ago - exactly as you mention, the track plays for 2 seconds or so then restarts and plays through.  Makes it virtually impossible to reliably listen to an album without glitches.

It's not 100% of the time, but too much for comfort.

I also noticed the 3 sec increments on the track playing displays which seems new.

The restarts also occur if I use another app when an album is playing and return to Qobuz - highly annoying.

I mentioned some of this in the firmware update thread a few days ago and was going to post separately.

I've been meaning to email Qobuz but they're last few responses about various things have not been that helpful.

I'm virtually certain it's the Qobuz app, unless it's showing up a glitch in the Nova's firmware - what's new with the app is that I'm now getting artwork with Chromecast which I didn't used to as they've tinkered with metdata support.

I have older Qobuz app versions on my other phone and iPad so should be able to determine for certain that it's the Qobuz app.

Ok, Qobuz 4.0.14 b11 on my iPhone X has not been updated and works fine as far as I can tell.

My older iPhone 6 has 4.0.15 b08 and this app was updated a day or two before I updated Nova firmware and I saw the problem immediately after (before Nova update).  Typically tonight it's barely doing it!  Just manage to crash the app though.

I am running my older iPhone with VERY little free storage - don;t suppose your iPad is in a similar state.

Have you noticed also that streaming no longer caches recently streamed items in the library - good or bad depending on what you might want and data plans.

Could it be a Qobuz server issue I wonder?

1  Try casting the Android screen rather than casting from the application.

2  Try using a different, stand alone, WAP.
I recently changed to a TP-Link Archer C2 (£25 from Argos), and my WiFi is now much faster and much more reliable (particularly as all my Android devices and the CCA can both use 5GHz).

Thanks Alleycat, your experiences seem very similar. Doesn't appear that I can blame the TalkTalk router after all!

I have checked and I am also running Qobuz version 4.0.15.b08 on the IPad, but version 4.0.15.b4001220 on the Samsung Galaxy, which as I said plays Qobuz fine. Lends weight to your assumption regarding the Qobuz update!  I thought it could be something to do with ios/android differences?? But I'm certainly no expert! As a result, whilst it would be useful to update the app. on the Samsung, I'm loathe to do so if it is likely to introduce the problem.

But to further muddy the waters, as I mentioned in my initial post, I can play qobuz through Ipad by connecting it with USB direct to Ndac with no issues! Also, whilst you indicated that your 3 second increments appeared new, these increments have existed for me from first installation some 1.5 years ago!

Regarding storage; no I've plenty left on my Ipad.

A little further digging needed on both our parts!

Thanks.

Regarding the 3 sec increments I suspect you're correct that it's been just so for ages - forgot to mention the older app does the 3 sec increments too.

I had less of the issue on the new app last night but annoying all the same - Qobuz have updated something to send cover art via Chromecast which it didn't do before which is nice but I'd sacrifice that for proper playback any day!

As it's intermittent I wonder if it could be a Qobuz server issue and a track briefly plays, connection lost or timeout error and the Naim tries again and succeeds second time?  Alternatively I wondered if there are 2 'fetches' on the Nova - say one for cover art which causes an audio glitch and the second for the audio itself but this seems unlikely - I just think the app has bugs as otherwise why would using another app and reverting to Qobuz app cause the current played track to restart.

Could I suppose be an iOS issue as I have different versions on different devices.

I've had confirmation from Qobuz that they are aware of the problems with the latest app release and a fix is in the offing.

Thanks Alley Cat, good news. I too contacted Qobuz but didn't get a response!

They responded very quickly this time to two queries - last time I tried it took almost a week.
