A little G & T?

Posted by: JamieWednesday on 29 March 2018

Never really been my thing, perhaps because my father drank it by the gallon when I was younger and I never had a taste for the Plymouth & Schweppes.

My wife, ever on trend, has recently joined a Gin by post thing however and I've turned into a bit of a Gin aficionado. I've discovered it's actually quite a pleasant way to unwind, particularly so with my current fave Salcombe Gin (typically the one only available by mail order it seems) and Fever-Tree Elderflower Tonic of all things.

Who'd have thunk it?

same here - never had a G&T until a few months ago and now am becoming addicted to Hendriks and Elderflower tonic. Very good early evening drink before dining - less filling than my beloved real ale.

I’m extremely fond of a G&T when out, and after years of Schweppes loyalty I am now a Fevertree convert.

A few years ago my late wife and I ended up with a glut of blackberries from picking trips, and a glut of apples from the garden. Having filled the freezer with pies and purses, and with our friends turning out the lights and pretending to be out if we came up their paths with pies in hand, we found a recipe for blackberry and apple gin, basically the cheapest gin you can buy poured over blackberries and apples and about half a kilo of caster sugar in a large Kilner jar or other sealable vessel, leave in the cool for 3+ months, filter and you end up with a lobpvely is dangerously quaffable fruit gin.

Gin has really taken off recently. Although it is relatively easy to set up shop and brew your own at short order.

Now Rum is where it's going.  Unlike gin it's a more difficult art to get right and it'll need to sit for a good few years - you won't see the explosion of British Rums for a good while

I’m not usually a fan of spirits, although I do like a single Malt and also like a Gin and Tonic now and then.

One pleasant discovery during the Düsseldorf boat show was Princess Yachts’ partner Plymouth Gin. Absolutely delicious! Certainly one of the nicest I’ve tried.

I don’t like gin on its own. I don’t like tonic water. But once a year I enjoy a gin and tonic. Who would have thunk it indeed...?

I'm pretty sure that back in November my work mate was buying his mrs a gin advent calendar.

What the hell is that all about, mine only ever had pictures behind the doors.

Works ok on the bog if we've run out of toilet duck.

I make limecello out of lime zest, grain alcohol an sugar every once in a while. This leaves me with 20 zested and forlorn-looking limes. I juice them and freeze the juice in ice cube trays. Dropping one in your G&T  makes a very different G&T, and it doesn't matter what kind of gin or tonic you use.

I looked into making lemoncello, using the cheapest vodka as the cheapest source of potable alcohol in Brtain, but was put off as it would cost almost as much as buying ready made.

As for G&T, not to my taste (though I like some gin cocktails) - for spirits malt whisky or a decent cognac are more to my taste - but the latter is so much more expensive than malt that I rarely bother. But of course G&T doesn’t really count as a spirit as it is dilute, so in comparison, Campari & soda, Aperol Spritz or Mojito are things I drink when needing something refreshing and cold (and different from a good real ale).
