Changing amps

Posted by: diggygun on 31 March 2018

Morning all

Current setup is 152/155/FlatCap going to PMC Twenty 23s. My source is a Linn LP12, essentially, Akurate spec with the Radikal PS.

I’m thinking to upgrade my amps to 282/250.

I know that this should be an improvement, but are there other options I should consider in this price range.

Also, I want to change the tone arm cable to the DIN plug and am looking at the Naim RCA/DIN cable or a Chord Shawline or Clearway. How do these cables compare?

Thanks in advance

I'd recommend the 250DR, or at least a 250 that can later be upgraded (i.e. a black one), but do bear in mind that the 250 and 250 DR have significantly different sonic characteristics.

You'll also need a HiCap to power the 282 (at a pinch the flatcap will do temporarily, but it will be the component that limits the overall performance).

The 282 / HiCap / 250DR is a very good combination to drive PMC Twenty.2x

Hi Huge

Thanks for the reply. Two questions

- What is the “DR”

- What is the difference sonically

The only components I have heard in my system are 152, 250.2 and 250DR, all loaned to me on different occasions.

I thought the 152 was a little bucket of joy. I'd keep it in preference to the rather more bland 202. My memories of the 282 aren't that good either. Probably an upgrade but you should audition.  The 152 is such an honest, joyful thing, as opposed to the 282's "trying a bit too hard to sound sophisticated" presentation. Good HiFi but short on music. Sure, the 152 is comparatively coloured and sloppy, but just seems to get to the music.

I don't know how a 155 stacks up against the 250DR. I didn't like the 250 at all. On the occasions when I had a 250.2 and later, the DR at home, I stopped listening to music some time before they were due to go back. But I'll leave it at that, before the lynch mob comes round the corner.

I'm sure your ears will know what is best for you.
