Sarum power cable

Posted by: lyndon on 31 March 2018

well, it’s rather good

i was sceptical, given that I’d already got powerlines to all 4 front end power supplies

after a bit of faffing about with the Radikal, on it went

And right from the off it was a game changer, a bigger difference than olive supercap to supercap DR - maybe not quite as much as 52 - 552DR

I’ve always been and still am sceptical of expensive mains cables

I tried a Nordost Valhalla 2 power cord into my power strip as a "favor" to my dealer.  I own it now.  I could not believe the difference myself.   I do believe the power cord is at least as important as the others.  I can hear it at my house.  It goes into a Nordost power strip which has all my Powerlines coming out of it.

One fellow I deal with in Vancouver encouraged me to try a Siltech Ruby Mountain II power cable.  I attached it to my 250DR.  Before that I had used a Powerline, which is a perfectly good power cable.  I have several of them.  However, it was no match for the Siltech.  There seems to be more punch & slam with the Siltech, more bass extension.  I'd like to try one with my 272 but am afraid that I might like it.

Keep an eye on the s/h market and be patient. You might be pleasantly surprised at prices a used Siltech Ruby Mountain II power cable sells for. A used mains cable is probably one of the safest s/h buys.

Not preserve, but thankfully extend beyond. Some listeners recognize apparent boundaries of Naim mains cables and have the objective wherewithal to find ones that work better for them regardless of badge.

Ask yourself how well Dynaudio speakers or a Chord Dave "preserve the Naim intended performance". Maybe then you'll get it and cease the incessant badgering; pro-Naim harassing on the Naim forum.

I only have 3 pieces of Naim gear - so far.  I'm on a steep learning curve.  While I may not pay too much attention to cable dressing and the massaging of one's Burndy in public, I do like to think that I am getting good musical value out of my system.  Is it the "Naim intended performance?"  I have no idea.  Does it sound good?  Yes.  And yes, I'm using a Chord Dave, which by the way sounds phenomenal, but I'd guess it's not quite the sound  that Naim purists are out to achieve.  However, I like it.

And that is exactly how it should be!

I am using Ansuz for my power, and it’s a significant increase of performance for my system....

Does the benefit of upgraded mains cables apply equally to a 'random' power socket as it would to a dedicated supply?

I recently changed out my standard Naim cables to Powerline Lites on my  olive setup (so the Hicap for the 82 and both  135s). They are plugged into a Wireworld Matrix block, which has another Powerline Lite connecting it to an old mains socket with no dedicated feed. I only got them because, when I was moving the amps to a new rack, I noticed that the old leads which were the ones I got with the boxes, so 24-29 years old, had split sheathing and what looked suspiciously like copper could be seen, presumably where spikes had landed at some point.

I didn't expect any change in sound, I only got the PLLs because they were reasonably priced (for this market) and looked nicer than the standard cables, I was realluy surprised to find a change in noise floor, I could listen at a quieter level than before.

Yes.

As much as the benefit of putting a dedicated domestic supply on a service that's provided to all and sundry in the local neighbourhood.

I am with Bert on this one. For the past few months i have been experimenting with Ansuz power cables and Mainz D distribution and i am astonished at the improvement they make in my system.

Wow, just checked the price list of Ansuz...they MUST be very good....

I very much appreciate the electronic 'wonders' from Naim, but it is with regret that I have strayed from the conventional. I use different cables and speakers: kind of like tailoring the sound to suit my personal pallete. The Naim cables procure a musical subset of possibilities, but further refinement is possible according to our own tastes and preferences. Sometimes it goes wrong but going back is always an option. Strike a compromise and the rewards can be delightful and very much welcomed. Things are not always black and white: relativity with shades of grey.

I just wanted to report that I have found a deal on a Furutech e-TP309 ‘power distributor’ - a device into which I’ll plug in my Naim gear & DAC.  To connect the Furutech to the wall, I’m going to use a short run of Odin power cable.  I’m heading out from work right now - will report on how things sound.

There's nothing you can really do about the mains beyond your property so best not worry about it. What you can do is make the best of your incoming feed with a dedicated radial and CU. Unless there is really no way of doing this (rented property, major cost and upheaval etc due to house layout) then I'd look at this route before spending money on audiophile mains cables.
