Power cable upgrade order
Posted by: Robert Burgess on 01 April 2018
Hi - Planning to upgrade from standard Naim power cables, but because of the expense will be doing it one at a time. Should I do the 250DR cable first, or the 272 streamer/pre-amp? As always, thanks for your input
I’d put the money towards an XPS DR.

Will do HH, when I can find a good one in the "pre-loved" market. Unfortunately they are rather scarce here in the States. In the meantime, I'm left with "tweakes", and wonder which power connection would have the biggest impact
It’s really a matter of trying it for yourself, as there is no right answer. I’d also ensure you have dedicated mains before thinking about posh wires. I’m not trying to be obtuse; merely guiding you to what makes the biggest difference.

Understood - thks
Hi, if you have a regular duplex wall outlet you may consider changing for a Hubbell Hospital Grade outlet or buy a Deep Cryo copy from AV-Options. That would provide a better contact in the first place.
Dedicated mains may bear greater fruit for UK users than for us in the US. For me, a quality wall outlet (as suggested above) and power strip were enough to quell any concerns over pursuing a dedicated mains circuit - the posh alternative in my mind.

Hi Joerand - Saw from your bio that you're using a couple of ZU Audio Event power cables. These are the ones I'm looking at. How do you like them? Thanks
Buy one and try separately on each device.
Are you talking about moving from the stock cords to Tibias, or to something beefier? I didn't find that Tibias made all that much difference. What are you using for a power strip? That makes an absurd amount of difference.
What works for me is preamp first as that will improve everything then source (s). I think power amps show the least improvements though they should be done too. I did all this many years ago but a few months ago a friend bought three very expensive cables over (£600 each) and boy do I need to replace what I now have only trouble is I really cant afford them ever. I need seven!! Even more interestingly we tried one on my Lingo 3 and even that improved things and that really shouldn't have happened.
272. Source first. And yes the second one on the 250DR will also be heard. And they last a very long time, regardless of system changes, so great value.
Thanks to all for your advice - much appreciated!

I recommended them highly in a recent thread. Probably the best value item in my system. I took a shot at the Event power cable knowing I had a 60-day return. Ended up buying a second one. I use them on my integrated and CD5X. Compared to Powerlines, the Events are more open and free-flowing, especially in the mids, with better shine to the highs. I'd give the Powerlines an edge for better bass grip. All in the ear of the beholder. The variety of lengths offered by Zu was another plus for me. I have a 1-m and 1.5-m Event. Great for cable management. Cheers.

Good to know. Thanks!
Hi Joerand - I currently use the Powerline on my 272, Core, and Chord Dave DAC. For the 250DR, I'm using a Siltech Ruby Mountain II cable. Today, I just picked up a second-hand Furutech e-TP309 power distributor which runs to the wall using a short run of Odin power cable. I've just finished plugging everything into the Furutech (which only has 4 outlets) - my JL subwoofer is plugged into another very plain power bar. I'll do some listening after dinner.
Does the powerline on the uniticore make a difference?
You know, I'm not sure. Maybe it makes the Core spin better - who knows. The Core is where I store most of my music - ripped and downloaded. For playback, I often use the digital out connected to a Dave DAC by a Siltech Golden Eagle digital cable (it's terminated with BNC), and then into the 272. So I guess that I'm treating my Core nicely, being the source in this system.

I tried one on mine Mango, and did not notice a difference, but others say they do.
I'm not hung up on using a Powerline with the Core, but if I don't use it I'll have to dig around for something else in the basement, and then what would I do with the Powerline? I suppose I could try it with my subwoofer....
