Naim Nova pre phono advices

Posted by: BeppeP on 02 April 2018

Dear All,

while I am waiting to collect my Naim Nova, I would like to ask you some advice on pre phono amp. I have a Technics SL turntable with AudioTechnica MM cartridge and I would like to connect to Naim Nova. I read few topics on the forum and seems that the only way to add a turntable is to plug into normal RCA using a pre-phono amplifier as Nova doesnt have a pre-phono in. Considering a budget up to 1000 and the fact that I would like to have some flexibility for future upgrades in the cartridge or even the turntable, which pre phono should I consider? I have noticed that there are some pre-phono that can be plugged through digital port, does it make a real difference rather using the normal RCA?

With a budget of up to £1000 then you have a number of options here which could well include a turntable, arm, and/or cartridge upgrade before spending so much on the Phono pre-amp.

Which Technics turntable do you have?

I have a Nova and use a Naim Stageline to connect my record deck. It will need a power supply. There are phono preamps such as Rega which will do the job without an additional supply - just plug them in. These all plug into the analogue input. Those going into a digital input are most likely intended for ripping lps to a computer file - using the analogue input is the norm.

I have a Technics sl1200 mk5, mm Technics. To be honest I don't want a phono preamp Naim, I am looking for a flexible solution if I change the cartridge in the future.

For the same reason (I use NAC272 and Bauer dps2) I have purchased a Rega Aria which support both mm and mc. Very flexible and within your budget. Vinyl is my source no 3 and a more costly phono pre is not on my list.

So Rega Aria is a good match with Naim?

Sure but with the TT/cartridge you have a Rega Fono MM will provide very near same performance at 1/3 price or less, offcourse if you later intend to run Moving Coil the Aria has this option too

Any of the Rega MM phono options will suit. A decent interconnect will also be required so factor that in to your budget.
