Posted by: French Rooster on 03 April 2018
hello,
i have an nds and wonder if the 4.6 update for this week will change the sound quality for my nds. The multi room aspect doesn’t interest me... if somebody can answer me. thanks
Donkeyhaute posted:Hmm. I'm not convinced by the DSP update. On my system there's now a bass bloom and the classically 'Naim' midrange hump has gone. I watched a film through it last night and it was noticeably harder to hear the voices due to midrange recess. The bass was like pushing a loudness button. I hope it's an adjustment period. I'll listen again later at reasonable levels. I imagine it'll sound better through NACA5 than Tellurium Q. This is, in no way, a criticism of our esteemed Beta testers, simply a reaction to how my own system sounds.
Guys, I am writing to flag that the the resulting SQ might not be to everyone’s liking (choosing my words carefully). I was disappointed and I won’t get into the details. Also, Naim does not recommend going back to 4.4. They are not sure. Going back might ‘break the product’. Well I took a chance and went back to 4.4. It worked just fine. Happy with the old sound. Just saying, don’t jump in.

Where do Naim say they do not recommend going back & that it might break the product. We've been going back & forward in beta testing since always.
Happy for you that you prefer 4.4,
Naim support might not be sure but I have it from the Naim design people that it's not only ok to go back to 4.4 but if you jump 4.4 and can't see Tidal when you update to 4.6, the fix is to then do 4.4 and after that do 4.6 again.

Naim have said in their previous updater instructions that you should not revert to earlier versions, and that old updates should even be deleted from your computer before starting a new update. I dare say I am not the only person who has consistently ignored these warnings, with no ill effects as far as I'm aware!
Just updated Nova from 2.3 to 2.6, reset to factory setting and updated app. Needed to pair remote again and set up fav radio station again which We're easy. Didn't update using computer but all from tablet and machine directly. Awesome. No degradation in terms of SQ.
Couldn't see max volume settings until app was updated. That's the only problem I ran into. Other than that it was fantastic. Perhaps I should have updated app before firmware.

Happy for you that you prefer 4.4,
They don’t on their site/ instructions however I spoke to them and was told that they do not advise a reversal. In any case I think they should have a disclaimer letting folks know that the update will have an impact on the sound. I am not complaining though cos I got my SQ back.
+1 on considering reinstall of 4.4

hey Mike, the factory reset can be done with app?

No, you need to use the remote/front panel display.

For FACTORY RESET you have to use the RC remote & the units screen display; press the tool (wrench) button to get the NDS display, then scroll down to >Factory Settings>Reset All Settings & then you get a screen warning asking "are you sure" then press the Play button.
But please note that the attached post (above) where I'm talking about screen appearance settings is NOT factory reset, & yes all these screen appearance changes are done in the app.
Just taking a quick break from other tasks while 'Prop Hat' from Trains to Taung happened to be playing (from Tidal) through the NAC-N 272. Mrs NewNaim16 and myself spontaneously looked at each other and both said "we've never heard it quite like that before!"
Thanks Naim for this excellent mid-life kicker - I mean the 272 not us

I'm not hugely computer savvy, I admit, but would have thought that the reset is considered by Naim to be the important final step in the process, otherwise, why would they have included it?
I didn't listen to my NDS before applying the factory reset, so I can't comment on any effect on sound quality, but if the experience of
BIGTREVY, above is typical, then I'm happy to have carried it out.
Anyhow, I'll more than likely have the chance to chat with Phil Harris over the weekend, and will seek his advice on the matter.
could you kindly point me to where in the installation instructions the factory reset step is mentioned? somehow I missed this step -- I watched the video a couple of times. must be senile dementia creeping in...
many thanks

Hi Ken,
Having downloaded the update, you'll find the advice to do a factory reset on page 10 of the accompanying PDF document.
As I mentioned elsewhere, during the download / installation process, the progress screen on my Mac didn't tell the whole story,
leading me to believe that "100% success" meant that the whole thing had completed.
I didn't go ahead with the factory reset until my NDS screen informed me that everything was done, and restarted itself, followed by my carrying out the factory reset, via the remote and NDS screen.
The 100% success just means the PC's work is done. You could disconnect it or shut it down then if then if you wanted. The streamer will complete the process without further instruction from the updater programme.
Best
David

thanks dave -- seen it now in the pdf. I recall now i did the update from the video, which doesn't mention the requirement for a FR.
Another question -- the .pdf says:
"PLEASE NOTE : It is strongly advised to uninstall any previous Streamer Updaters you may have on your computer."
I missed this step -- does this matter?

Ken I am convinced that this is to stop accidental installation of the wrong version. I have both 4.4 and 4.6 on my PC at the moment and I just make sure that I know which is which.

Ken,
I think it,s there just to ensure that you actually install the latest firmware version rather than just reinstall your existing firmware.

thanks david. that's what I thought too -- but then 'strongly advised' suggested to me a possible interaction between the 2 versions -- which would be strange but ...

Brilliant. Thank you
Well I've plugged in the cable and have got system automation working. I am even able to select the NAT01 from the iPad! I also have the volume control at the bottom of the now playing screen. This is excellent.
However, does anyone know if there is any way I can stop the unused selections (Digital 1, 2, 3) from appearing on the home screen so that the Pre-tuner can be shown on the front screen?
Just turn off unused inputs under input settings on the App. I think that’s what you are after, anyway.

Little cog button in the top right, then “Input Settings”. Select the ones you want to disable and deselect “input enabled”.
Here's a Q, just before the update starts, you have a few versions to choose from. I'm sure the instructions tell you to select Western Europe
What difference can it make if you select Eastern Europe or one of the others?
The languages saved in the streamer are different.
