It sets it back to how it was when it came out of the factory, except with the latest firmware. So yes you will lose all your settings.

Whether to do this or not has been discussed endlessly on this thread and one or two others, so if you read back a few days, you will see it all. But note that this thread is about the legacy Uniti and classic black box streamers not new Uniti.

Finally, after uninstalling drivers, reinstalling drivers, uninstalling them again and reinstalling them again and trying 12 leads, I appear to have done something to make this process work under Win10. I didn't pull the trigger because the NDS had already been updated to 4.6 with an old Win7 machine. Having establish communication, I believe the process would have gone through successfully.

The lead that worked is the usual one that I use. The driver is exactly the same as the previously installed one which didn't work, unzipped to and run from the same location when installing.

Unless my hardware and software are misconfugured or in some way damaged, I can find no reason to explain why the process I went through for the umpteenth time today spontaneously worked when I hadn't before.

This might well be my problem to own, and as it turns out, to fix. But I think it would be complacent of Naim to assume this. I expect they haven't.

At the end of the day there are a number of quite complicated processes going on, and so many variables, the choice of mini usb cables in Maplins was enough to have me downloading the pdf onto my phone just to be sure of the right one, add to that a lot of people skimming the instructions, I’m not sure what Naim could have done that would have made anything any easier, the process is what it is. My fear with all the complaints is next time they just won’t bother.

I very much doubt there will be a further update to the firmware for legacy streamers, not due to complaints about the install process but because they will surely now focus updates on the new N range and new Uniti streamers.

This is what has happened with updates being stopped on the UnitiServe but continuing with the Core.

I hope I am wrong and, being a proud NDS owner, would love Naim to tell me it is not so.

I don't think I would like the sound of my NDS to change from what it is. I suppose there could be more to come. Or less. Not all the FW updates have been "better" to my ears. I suppose that's another advantage to these updates. You could roll back and stick on the FW you like best. Particularly, as is the case with me, that I use the NDS only for uPnP streaming from a NAS on my home network.

I didn't skim any instructions. I didn't use the wrong cable. I didn't try to install the wrong driver(s). I'm sure Naim are tracking these issues. I'm not in a minority of one here.

I too had issues with the 4.6 update and I have done plenty of Naim f/w updates in the past with no issues, so I am pretty sure it wasn't me being stupid.

Personally I highly rate what 4.6 has done to the overall SQ. So much so, I have no thoughts of a ND555, not that I could afford one anyway. For me it was well worth the agro of installing 4.6 for the wonderful SQ uplift but it really should have been easier, which I realise it was for many. I would love to think there might be a 4.7 for legacy streamers with further SQ enhancements sometime in the future but I suspect not.

Must have been lucky. PlayStation 3 controller charging lead. Cheapo ether net cable and an old laptop. Worked first time

Posted on: 13 April 2018 by Harry

My old laptop worked first time also. It was the new one that refused to behave itself.

I too had the same thought. Personally I thought the process for this optional free update was pretty well documented and although I too had a glitch, it wasn't very onerous to resolve. It seems to me that to some extent, Naim have taken the brunt of frustration that might be more accurately directed to Silicon Laboratories.

I thought the whole download / installation process was fairly straightforward and worked fine for me on my NDS.

Mind you, I'm still slightly baffled at the number of folks who decided that there was no to carry out the final step in Naim's instructional PDF, i.e. the Factory Reset, and have subsequently complained about loss of SQ.

... spot on, although Apple and Microsoft have moved the architecture of their operating systems on so much over the last couple of years, it’s not surprising that continued support for drivers of older hardware is not straightforward.  Naim shouldn’t really be blamed for things that are out of their control, particularly as Naim dealers would likely do this upgrade FOC (and Naim would recommend you have a dealer do it).

I suspect there will not be a ‘next time’ for the legacy platform products. Unless one of the integrated streaming providers introduce a breaking update, which is unlikely, why would Naim invest time in providing further updates? With limited development budgets and the “new platform’ about to be rolled out across the classic and 500 series I suspect Naim will stick with 4.6. I updated seamlessly, and am enjoying what it has brought to my NDS, but my future will be ND555 orientated.

NDS updated without a hitch.... pleased, more detailed low end bass ..... great with my sub...top end seems more open with more sparkle....high frequencies seem to be better controlled vocal sybalence is reduced....overall effect more musical ..... happy .. thanks Naim.

I am very pleased with the SQ via local streaming from my NAS to my NDS with 4.6. I am just having a first listen to Tidal since updating to 4.6 and I swear this too has an uplift in SQ.

Has anyone else noticed an improvement in SQ from Tidal with 4.6?

Naim will still want top legacy streamers like NDS, probably NDX, 272 and SU too, to be able to co-exist in systems with newer units, so I'm looking forward not to 4.7 but rather 5.0!

I hope you are right David. What the 4.6 experience has taught me is that the NDS potentially has so much more to give.

Very happy NDS owner here and I care not a jot that it has been killed off and superseded by the ND555. It is sounding sublime!

David,

I assume that’s without skipping official releases for 4.7, 4.8 and 4.9.

I don't know really. Naim often misses out incremental updates, 4.5 most recently. What I meant is that 5.0 is a whole major release forward, probably mainly around features and compatibility, but who knows?! Actually I was quite happy with 4.3, such that I didn't bother to upgrade to 4.4 except on my UQ2 out of curiosity and my 272 came from the factory with 4.4.

272/XPSDR sounding really really good. All of the qualities @RICHIEROO describes above.

Very pleased with 4.6 indeed.

Hi David,

my comment was tongue in cheek i.e. it would mean a whole load of beta releases for testing and a long wait between official releases between 4.6 and 5.0. Remember it has been 3 years between releases 4.4 and 4.6.

Sorry I missed the tongue in cheek! Anyway I guess we are in pretty much the same place on this!

One quick question before I attempt the update later tonight.Do I need to power down the 272 before I plug in the USB cable,or can I just pop it in?I got my laptop back with a new hard drive installed, and windows 7.I am currently at work, but I plan to install the driver on the laptop from here, set my laptop to not sleep,so when I get home I can get right on it...just not sure about the 272,and if I have to power down before connecting.

No need to power down, just plug it in. The instructions on the updater on your computer will tell you when to turn the streamer off and on at the start of the update process.
