4.6 update and upgrade sound quality ?
Posted by: French Rooster on 03 April 2018
hello,
i have an nds and wonder if the 4.6 update for this week will change the sound quality for my nds. The multi room aspect doesn’t interest me... if somebody can answer me. thanks
No need to turn anything off and on at any point. Plug it in and off you go. It’ll be fine.
Thanks guys, looking forward to this for sure.

Has anyone else noticed an improvement in SQ from Tidal with 4.6?
Just received my NDX back from service this afternoon. It was gone for a month to repair a 'DIN output that had one channel out' and while it was away they updated the firmware!
The first album on TIDAL that I am playing is Melody Gardot's 'Currency of Man' which you had mentioned in the WAYLT&YWABI thread. Yes there is an apparent improvement in the SQ right from the get go. I am looking forward to this weekend and plan to give a number of albums a spin via TIDAL and the NAS.
I have been following this thread for days now and it was great to experience the difference first hand and feeling that it is an improvement vs the disappointment others have mentioned.
Ok, I have the driver installed and extracted. Do I use the installerx64,or x86?

with windows 7 i think it is x64. It was a real pain for me, but i am not a computer guy. Good luck!

I am not a computer guy either...thus the dumb questions.I opened the PDF,and it said one is for 32 bit windows, the other is for 64 bit...now to try and find out which one I have.

i have a ten years laptop with windows 7 and i remember now that i extracted the 64 version. If you can extract and execute this silabs 64 version for usb, you will very easily be able to download the 4.6 update after.
After, when the update is finished, restart your streamer and do a factory reset, directly on the streamer facia. You will loose your settings but you will be sure to have done the process as recommended by naim. If you have the new uniti streamer, like star or nova, better not do the update.....
Thanks FR,I have figured it out that I need the 64 bit version,I downloaded and extracted that, but I am still at work for another hour and a half.I am pretty confident that once I get home,I can plug it in and get started.Luckily a guy here that I work with helped me out a bit,he is younger, and more computer savy than me.
you will be pleased when you will succeed. Some guys here helped me too, like Mike or David Hendon. You will have a little boost in sound quality....
It all appeared to be going well, then on the laptop it said update complete, with a check mark. However,on the 272 it says
Fault 61
BridgeCo Int fail
i Have left everything as is,but now what do I do?
HELP!
Previous threads regarding fault 61 seem to indicate that this is one for Naim Technical Support/Salisbury.
Fault 61 - simply power off for a minute then restart the 272, This will clear it.

I don’t know,I ended up powering down the 272,and it rebooted and everything worked. Then I did a factory reset, and that alarm came back, powered down again and it is now gone,so I am not sure what is going on there. For now it is working,so I am going to kick back and have a listen...so far, sounds really nice.
That's good to hear (excuse the pun).
Always the way with tech switch off, leave and switch on. Can't believe I didn't actually think of it.
I can not really turn up the volume yet,it is 2 AM here in Canada, but low volume listening sounds very good, almost feels more mature,or relaxed,in a good way.By the way,I checked the APP,and I am on 4.6 firmware,so I guess it was a success.
NQ I only just got up here in the UK so I missed this. I'm glad your update worked. Although this fault code 61 normally indicates a hardware fault and a trip back to the factory, it does seem to occur on some streamers when you do this 4.6 upgrade. We saw it once during beta testing and several people have reported it since release, including myself when I updated my Unitilite.
Turning it off and on again does seem to clear it and I haven't heard of it recurring after that, so I think you should be fine. Enjoy the music!

David,
I may have missed you saying this previously , but what was your opinion on the change in SQ specifically when you updated your Unitilite to 4.6? On my Uniti2 with Focals 926 I found only marginal difference, just a possible increase in ‘transparency’.

i haven't listened to the Unitilite much at all since the update as it's in a room we don't use often and the least used of our multiroom system. I had a quick listen after the update just to check it worked still (!) and it sounded similar to me to how it was before. But I haven't really got an opinion.

Thought I’d get in early this morning and update before the web gets full with Grand National traffic. Went flawlessly through ol’ trusty Win 7 PC into the NDS. SQ change very apparent, fuller bass with bit more definition, overall clarity lift with some previously unheard textures coming through. Thinking of a double bass plus some piano notes. Thanks Naim, well impressed.
Fundamental 4.6 SQ improvement makes me feel that Naim cares existing customers and not just discontinuating pretty expensive NDS. It is very good that the update brings NDS closer to ND555. It is not affecting negatively to the new products sales, it is promoting them and it is very very clever thing. Because of this update now I do not need to even think about Chord Dave or Linn Klimax or MSB.
One wish Naim, please do 5.0 at some day to show your competitive edge.

Agreed.
One of the biggest upgrades in naim's hierarchy, and also for free: 4.4 -> 4.6
The NDS was, for me, a nice to have source, but nothing more than a polite-convenient way to hear music.
I listened mostly to my CDS-2 + 555PS DR and LP12. Now though, the NDS has become a very serious source.
BP.

I suspect you may not have left it switched off quite long enough for all the capacitors to discharge fully and it to get back to 'base' electrical state. This can take a few minutes.

Hi David, the time difference between Britain and Canada does mean the forum is pretty silent after 9 PM (my time).I knew this could cause me some grief if I ran into trouble, but simply could not wait, much like Christmas morning as a kid. All sorted out now though,it still would be nice to hear from Naim,as to why this fault showed up after the update was finished.I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that my laptop had a brand new hard drive, and windows 7 installed just yesterday.

For anyone else wondering which version of Windows they have you should open file manager/explorer, and right click on "This PC" then select "Properties" from the dropdown list. Under "System"/"System Type" it will tell you whether your computer is 32 or 64 bit so you can select the correct silabs driver to install.
SiLabs installation software does not allow an install of the 'incorrect' 32 or 64 bit version on my Win-10 x64, so I doubt its possible to get it wrong..
