Prefix; HicapDR of Olive Supercap

Posted by: Robert1 on 06 April 2018

Dear All,

Recently I have bought a Prefix S for my LP 12 with Ekos 1/Dynavector 20X2.  I can feed it from the Aux 2 on my HicapDr/ Supernait 2 but l am also looking at a second hand Hicap  (DR) or Olive Supercap (recapped).

Maybe Olive is better voiced for the Prefix ?

What do my fellow Naimees suggest ?

Thanks,

Robert

Olive Supercap always over except Hicap DR except on Nac 202 and lower. Some will disagree but a SC’d prefix is much better than Hicap DR.

I've tried the Prefix using the 52 powered input, with a Hicap, a supercap, the 552 powered input and a custom supply. The Supercap was leagues and leagues ahead of any alternative-there was just so much more dynamics, extension and excitement. Any other alternative just seemed flat and boring. The Prefix has very low current demands, yet seems to benefit the Prefix more than it does even compared to a Snaxo over the HIcap (I have tried this option too). I suppose having a circuit with so much voltage gain really requires as low noise a supply as possible.

Just do it.

Thanks Ton and Bob for your clear answers and it will even save me money over a new HiCapDR ;-).

Another vote for the supercap, I’ve done 52/PS hi cap and olive supercap and there’s a clear winner

olive supercaps are not that expensive now, I should know, I sold my ones last year for much less than I was hoping for

Indeed.

Different power supply sources can product different results, and it just depends which differences one prefers.

I preferred my hicap on prefix, nicer more natural on the bass. The supercap is technically rather wasted on a prefix because it isn't designed to use a burndy cable, but you pays your money and makes your choice.

Also tried my 552 power outlet which was as good if not better than the hicap, and saves box count & shelf space : )

For some of us at Naim a favourite power supply for the Prefix was to take an old orphan 52PS and modify the DIN5 output so it approximated what you would get from a Supercap. I had one of those and it was wonderful. I think a friend has it now.
