More sorting issues

Posted by: Bryce Curdy on 08 April 2018

Some of you may remember a post I started about wishing to sort and display my library by surname but for the Artist (or in my case Album Artist) to be displayed as Forename Surname.  The example I gave was David Bowie displayed as 'David Bowie' but sorted under B.  This had proven more challenging than I expected but using dBpoweramp you are able to add Artist Sort and Album Artist Sort tags.

And this has worked but not without a gremlin.  I'm now about a third of the way through updating the tagging and have encountered a strange issue but only for the letters B and C.  All the artists beginning with those letters whose sort tags I have changed appear after another letter tile corresponding to their forename.  So if I go Album Artist Sort > B all the bands and artists surnames beginning with B display but in amongst these are letter tiles.  for example a letter tile D will be followed by David Bowie and J is followed by Jeff Buckley but only under letters B and C.  I have rebooted the NAS, rescanned the entire library and deleted the image cache.  I have not (yet) reset the app in case something unexpected hapens.

There is also an option on the app to organise the library.  I'm not sure whether this is new after last week's firmware update and thought the app and streamer only handled what UPnP presented to it in any case.

Grateful for any advice and well aware many of you probably wonder why I'm letting this bother me.

Hi Bryce

There's an option (A-Z, I think) at the top of the relevant screen in the Naim App - this toggles between on and off.

I've also just had to change one of the sort settings in Asset. The default setting would show David Bowie under B and D, even with the relevant tags set. Changing the setting in Asset soon got it to my preferred way!

Ah.  Thanks Gavin.  That's helped hugely.

Presenting my library on the Naim app in the way I want it to appear has been much more challenging than it should have been.

Is there a way to store all of my albums and artwork on my Naim app?  I've got over 4500 albums stored, and I keep buying duplicate CDs.  It would be great to look up a CD before I buy it.  Seems to me that this could be done when I still had my HDX.

The Naim App wouldn't work for this - it'd need to be connected to your music server.

You need some sort of cataloguing software - I use Music Collector which means I have my collection listed on my phone - and can check before any purchase. There was a recent thread about dumping the folder structure of your ripped CDs (if you have that) to Excel.

If you're still only playing your CDs and don't have them ripped, then something like Music Collector is excellent - albeit a pain to have to go through all your CDs to catalogue them!

N-Serve would cache basic album info so that you could view it when not connected to your music store. This doesn't happen in the Naim app. Presumably you are buying CDs out there in the real world, rather than making online purchases sitting on the sofa where you could still check your music library?!

Oh but it’s so much more fun to crawl through the actual CD’s is a store ... that n-Serve functionality was great indeed!

Perhaps if you have access to an actual store! Living in the middle of nowhere, I am largely limited to online stores, so as long as I'm at home, I can still view my CD rips.
