Equipment in next room instead of new rack

Posted by: Martin128 on 09 April 2018

I have seen posts on the improvements a Naim Fraim can make but could you place your equipment in a different room from the listening room and get the same improvements? I ask because I have a garage at the other side of my room at the speaker end and could easily drill through the breeze block wall for speaker cable and a couple of interconnects, if the hifi racks are for separating equipment and reducing vibration surely moving the hifi into a separate room would be better even if just placed on concrete floor of garage. I’m new here and hope I’m not asking a question that has already been answered but I have searched and found nothing to specifically answer my question, thanks in advance for your time and help.

I recall reading that this was exactly how Ivor Tiefenbrun discovered the benefits of acoustic isolation which drove him to develop the LP12.

Hi Geko, no problem. By the way, I don't think I said that racks don't make a difference....they just don't isolate.   In terms of measurement of energy dissipation, my experience is measuring the performance of electronic components under defined vibration conditions - hence my view. I have no view of the adequacy or otherwise of audio measurement - to me its a machine for entertainment, so if it sounds good it is good.

Peder,

Just to add a bit of clarity, when I said '..so no loss in performance', I meant in isolation performance.  As I don't believe that racks isolate (with the exceptions I noted), then going to a more prosaic rack (say something made out of stainless steel, with spikes to aid levelling and and not to go rusty in the garage....) won't make a difference to this criterion.

BTW have you tried a Mana Soundstage or two under the DBLs? Makes them sort of wobbly-wobbly (when you push them, they oscillate gently back and forth), and they sound very good that way!
