Naim Nova - Vinyl Inputs - Speaker Delay?

Posted by: Leon Wadsworth on 09 April 2018

Hi everyone, I have recently updated all my Naim Equipment. When I play vinyl through the nova there is a delay between the needle and the Speaker sound. Pretty sure it wasn’t there before the update... I was playing something at a steady volume last night and could hear the trebles through the needle out of sync with the speaker which was really annoying. Then today when I lifted the needle part through a track as I had to head out noticed the speakers continued for half a second-ish before cutting out. Ive never noticed any of this strange behaviour before.

1) Can any nova owners do the same, lift needle and see if there is any delay and confirm if you’ve updated to latest firmware?

2) Is there anything I can do to eliminate it? I’ve noticed 2 settings on the input in the app i but don’t know what they do: 1) Input trim and 2) lipsync?

Any advice for a bewildered chap?

Many thanks

Leon

Fixed by - Unplug 10 sec then replug Nova and Phono stage. Not sure which one sorted it I unplugged both.

How odd!! I'm told that the Nova digitises the signal from its analogue inputs, so I would guess that this process might have caused they delay. My vinyl days are over, so I can't test anything for you, but it sounds like there's no longer any need for that?

In answer to your questions:

Input trim adjusts the relative volume volume level for that input.

Lip sync adjusts the time delay on the audio signal, so that it can be synchronised with video if you are using the Nova linked to a TV. Now I think about it, I wonder if you had inadvertently adjusted this to cause the delay you were hearing?!

In digital signal processing the issue is referred to as ‘latency’.

However what is odd is that it was so pronounced on the Nova. A re-set seems to have cured it....

There is a delay when using multi-room to listen to vinyl, but when I turn multi-room off the delay disappears. I'm guessing this is simply buffering to make sure everything stays in sync in case of network delays.

I get the same lip sync problem on my Sky HD box sometimes. The fix is to change to a non HD channel for a couple of seconds and then back to the HD channel we were watching. I guess this flushes a buffer or something similar and restarting the Nova will have done the same thing.

It won't have been the phono stage causing the problem. Latency in analogue HiFi is not an audible thing fortunately!
