Alternatives to Naim for ROON
Posted by: MangoMonkey on 10 April 2018
Anyone with any experience with ROON streamers with low jitter, low noise power supplies. The streamer will simply output to the NDS optical or Coax in?
Looking at BlueSound Node 2, Auralic Aries - not sure if they're any good into a 500 series system.
Sonore rendu + usb/spdif from Sonore....
Sonore UPnP Bridge, so no need to convert to S/PDIF, the Bridge just presents itself as a Roon Endpoint.
Set the Bridge to WAV output and with 'FLAC compression', the bridge transcodes PCM (FLAC, ALAC etc.) to WAV, and with DoP setting, DSF is passed through as native DSD64.
Happy days.
Agree with Simes_Pep, after a lot of looking about, using Hugo etc with microrendu, if I was to do over I would just use Sonore UPNP bridge whether as a hardware unit or as software on a Sonore *Rendu product playing into NDX.
The Roon forum is a friendly place, lots of suggestions there, and many here using this config into NDS.
Anyone with experience with Auralic?
I have G2 with USB to DAC but the G2 can have spdif or aes out as well. It works pretty good with roon. Before that I that, I had the Aries. Sounds not as open and tight as G2, soundstage is not that wide as well. But overall a pretty good device with a good VFM!
SOTM sms200 is supposed to be very good with the ultra version being even better. But it's usb only so would need a usb DAC.
I use the Auralic Aries mini (with an iFi psu) via coax into my NDS, and this gives very good results on my system (252/SCAP, 300DR/PS, with a 555PS/NDS, ATC SCM40).

It very much depends on your budget and on how easy it is for you to get demos. Pretty much everything from a Raspberry Pi to the new Antipodes, Innuos, etc. can act as a Roon endpoint. If you are in the market for a 10K+ source, Innuos have just announced a new "Statement" server with separate power supply, dedicated USB source, high precision clocks, etc. It should be shown at the Axpona this weekend.
