Do DR Version Amps Require Connection to a Pre-amp to be Powered UP?

Posted by: BritishSea on 11 April 2018

The new Naim manual for the DR amps ( in my case a 250DR) states that the amp should be connected to a pre-amp before being turned on.

However, I recall comments from the fourm that the new DR models don't have this limitation  - while for the non-DR versions a pre-amp connection is still recommended for the amp to be stable.

I have another Naim amp on demo for a week right now and would like to keep the 250DR warm ( i.e. powered up)  so that I can a do a swap at some point to compare them.

Does anyone know the real scoop on this issue?  Does the NAP250DR require connection to a pre to be powered up for extended periods of time?

The preamp should be powered on before the poweramp and powered down after the poweramp.
This is to stop the switch on / switch off pulses from the preamp from damaging the speakers.

You can switch on and leave on the not in use power amp by all means but you will have to switch it off briefly when connecting it to your system. Simples.

Thank to both of you. Fred, what you say makes sense to me and of course I will power down while the preamp gets connected again .  I find a 30 second power down has no effect on an amp.
