Mains power spike protection

Posted by: NJB on 11 April 2018

I live in an area that gets power outages due to summer storms.  I want to provide my Naim system with protection against the potential mains spikes that could occur, but as I am in a rented house then my options are limited.

I have read that the normal surge suppressor multi sockets are a problem as they do affect the SQ of the system.  Can anybody recommend how best to fix my concern?  Do Furutech or Wireworld offer suitable items (although Furutech sometimes get mentioned as not good with Naim)?

It would help to know if you're in North America, Europe, or elsewhere. The Wiremold L10320 power strip is inexpensive and very good IME. but doesn't offer surge protection. It does allow you the convenience of unplugging a single cord to protect your gear. For surge protection with Naim gear Audience Adept Response power conditioners are generally well regarded; however, expensive and primarily for North American users. They do have limited Euro models.

Furutech with Naim? I used a Furutech GTX-D Rhodium wall socket in my all-Naim system and was pleased with the results, so I wouldn't patently rule them out.

Simple zinc oxide VDRs work OK, unlike most mains 'conditioners'.

If your concern about ‘summer storms’ is that you’re worried about your house being hit by lightning, the safe solution is to unplug the mains leads. Also the phone cable if you have network connected gear.

I am in Switzerland.  Thanks for the replies and will follow up on the recommendations

Hi NJB,

Maybe worth a call to your dealer as GrammoFile (a sister company to Chektone, the Naim distributor) in Switzerland conveys Torus Power products. Their RM Series offers surge protection in addiction to clean power through a big toroidal transformer. It may be worth a listen as it may also help clean up the mains in a crowded area. I have seen these products at dealers and they supposedly work well with Naim. Don't know if they can fit your budget though, as they're more expensive than a power bar. Maybe your dealer can arrange a demo ?
