No more tuner from Naim ?
Posted by: engjoo on 12 April 2018
Just noticed that the NAT05 XS has been discontinued. Seems like radio is dead which is pretty sad.
Any ideal if the new classic streamer will have a tuner board option? Please do not suggest Vtuner as the I still prefer old good analog FM radio.
If you prefer an "old good analog" FM tuner then your best bet is to look out for just that. Any of the NAT tuners would be great, even the rather overlooked NAT03. Best to draw up a shortlist of what you want - for example, if you want remote control operation (and RC5 remote operation in particular) then that does limit you to a NAT05 from Naim or else possibly a late Marantz or Philips tuner, or one of a number of UK designs that used the same RC5 remote codeset.
Thanks Richard. Currently shortlisting the NAD C427 tuner.
Devasting to learn that analog radio is (almost) dead.
I wouldn't say FM is dead. It looks like it'll be going for quite a while yet. The new tuner market is somewhat limited as the demand is just not there. As Richard mentions, there is some really nice pre-loved kit available for not a lot of money so plenty of choice around.

The photos I've seen of the back of the new streamers show no FM antenna connection, so I guess this will not be an option. They were probably just prototypes, though. Early announcements from Naim mentioned FM as an option on the Star and Nova, but this have not yet become available.

Like James, I think we are some way off in the UK.

I’ve just retired a Denon TU 1800 a cracking tuner the DAB performance with a proper external DAB aerial was superb you can pick them up for under a £100 an absolute bargain.

Last I heard, Naim are looking at end of 2018.

I remember that the Nad 4225 was a particular favourite of (IIRC) Noel Keywood in Hifi Review.
Plenty of good tuners out there for peanuts; Rotel RT-850AL, Hitachi FT-5500, Creek 3140, A&R, etc.. And for a bit more you can get a real classic like a Technics ST-8077K, Sony ST-S555ES, Sansui TU-9xxx, Nytech, Ion FMT, Onix BWD, the list goes on... In fact, there are probably way more good tuners than bad, although age may have dimmed many by now.
I am the lucky owner of a Naim 01 Tuner. One of the nicest piece of kit they made.
It replaced a B & O 5000 tuner which I still have and intend to keep. Having said that I would put the B & O in the frame for a quality FM tuner. From memory Yamaha did a 7000 which was also highly regarded.
Douglas.
There is no need for a FM tuner with iRadio. Furthermore >=192 kbs iRadio sounds better.

Perhaps if you're using a cheap portable with a wire coat hanger for an aerial, I would agree with you

i had a NAT05 and next to iRadio on the ND5XS, with let's say radio 2, i prefer iRadio. 96 kbs sounds crap of course.
When FM is gone, will the governments provide a free internet service to everyone even in the furthest locations of the country? What happens in case of an emergency if nobody can communicate the facts by radio?

Think I have one of those somewhere!
Currently use a nat 05 tuner and it works fine and the remote is nice, but I'm still a fan of tandberg and miss my old 3011,even the 3001 goes relatively cheaply, but may be from hard to impossible to get serviced- but if willing to take a chance (?)

My NAT01 on R3 easily outclasses my NDS sreaming R3 - often demonstrated when I need to flip back to VHF cos our broadband speed is so pedestrian
No streaming where I live more like a piddle slowed to a trickle. Still good old Narrowreach is installing fibre down the lane. They started last summer - poor lambs, they’re working so hard drinking tea and eating sandwiches in their vans and warming the planet by leaving their engines on idle the whole time when they do show up on site - moan, moan.......

Is that one of BBC's HLS station ? There is no way the local radio stations in Singapore can sound better over vtuner.
And not forgetting the good old Quad tuners

Hi Engjoo, the HD version of BBC HLS service is 48kHz 339kb/s, the non-HD is 48kHz 135kb/s
Comparing the same stations from BBC HLS (HD) & terrestrial FM its at a point where BBC HLS is comparable. For me It depends on the material content - jazz rock classical. Obviously a lot of personal preferences, e.g. some think iRadio its too 'digital' and/or not as smooth, others like BBC HLS with its extended top end, stronger bass & less compression. The new 4.6 firmware on my NDX has swung it more towards iRadio (for me)

You really think in cases of emergency we will get facts?
(Sorry this comment probably needs deleting being off topic and everything)

A joke perhaps, or issue with aerial ?!
Have iRadio upstairs and quite surpriced how decent it sounds
But my Naim fm tuner is the real thing, indeed much better

The Quad FM4 in particular is very good and they aren't expensive. A classic British design from an appearance point of view too. (Having said that, I did swap mine for a pair of properly terminated NAC-A5 cables when my mate had them spare as he replaced them with SL).
best
iRadio on my HDX doesn't even come close to my NAT05 using a roof mounted Ron Smith Galaxy aerial, even on BBC Radio 2, which although not as compressed as Radio 1, still isn't as good quality as Radio 3.
I'm surprised to see people saying they find iRadio better sounding. Surely there is a problem with their signal quality/strength?

nothing wrong with fm signal, iRadio simply sounds better.
