Strange issue

Posted by: Fabio 1 on 13 April 2018

Hi all. Some guys on here already know from my "time to upgrade"thread that I was waiting for my new 282,I thank them one more time.Well,it arrived yesterday, took it home and,big surprise,no NAPSC at all into the box!I got on the phone in one second and called up my retailer.Yesterday he told me he didn't know why and he had to make some phone calls:"Fabio, please be patient.I'm telling you something tomorrow morning".I got his call this morning and he told me that "probably"in the UK there are two ways of purchasing an NAC 282ne with the NAPSC and one without(!).I told him that I'm an Naim Forum member since 2010 and I've never heard such a thing, not even in one  official Naim brochure!!Anyway he asked me the 282's serial number and next week I will have my NAPSC,he than apologized for this issue.I will be patient and wait. There's another kind of problem I would like to tell you guys.Writtens on the 282's rear panel and the manual inside the box are different from the ones I read on the Naim web site:"HDD"DIN input instead of"TAPE IN/OUT"Din input. Also, the sith DIN input from left on my 282 rear paneldoesn't say "AUX 2 IN",no written above.it.Hi Richard, hope all is fine. Will you please tell me something about this issue?Thank you so much.Ciao

Fabio,

yes, AFAIK you can order a NAC282 without a NAPSC - it makes things easier for those upgrading from say a maxed out NAC202 - that way you don't have to sell the old NAPSC only to have to pay for another one in the overall NAC282 price.

It has been a while since I looked at the back panel of a NAC282, but the last time I'm sure it looked like this (image taken from the Naim website):

If yours is different, please take a picture and post it here on this thread.  Intrigued...

My 282 is labelled as Fabio says, but as far as I can see from the pin diagrams, there is no actual difference except to the naming of the inputs. I guess Tape is considered obsolete, so they have called it HDD instead.

Ah, thanks Chris.  Yup, looks like a label rationalisation.

Same as my 252

The SN2 is also labelled hdd in/out instead of tuner. The SN1 I had was labelled tuner, so the label change, I would guess, had to occur sometime around 2013-14. I would imagine the whole line was updated around that year.

Thank you Richard,so my retailer was right...I really didn't know about this different ways of purchasing an 282.Also,I will not post a photo of the rear panel of my 282, as you opportunely suggested, because is the same one of Chrissu, and I thank him very very much.Anyway S/N is 429260.I also purchased a brend new Headline yesterday to be powered by my old NAPSC.Chrissu,I will tell you more as soon as I connect my new Headline to HDD,then, instead of TAPE IN/OUT on my old 202.Hope everything will be fine.Finger crossed.Thank you all guys,I knew this was the right place.Mille grazie.Ad maiora.

I just connected my new 282 this way:from "Socket 4" on the Hicap to "Upgrade 2"on 282.From "Socket3"on Hicap to "Input" on 200."Link2" on 282 with no plug."Standard" on 282 with no plug.I know I'm missing so plug but I don't know wich, infact "Source mute " on 282 is flashing.I made the same connections I had on 202.Napsc is connected.I have another Hicap powering my Superline.Any help?

Fabio, with a single Hicap you need to connect to Upgrade 1, with link 2 plugged (paddle covers the Upgrade 2 socket).

A single Hicap with the 282 should be connected to upgrade 1.

If i was you, i would read the manual first and then go from there.

Edit - Richard's beat me to it.

What a great preamp, unbelievable. What intrigue me a lot is the burning in period! This week the second NAPSC is arriving,so I can use my new Headline. My SR 80 can't count the days...

The 282 is a real star, isn't it Fabio? I don't remember much of a burn-in period with mine. Perhaps that's because I used a pre-loved PSU with mine that was already run in.

I see MDS,thank you for that.I will tell you more as days are passing.

Excellent choice, Fabio. I have the same set up as you- 282/HL/700.  The 700 will need time to fully run in, about a month in my case, but well worth  the wait. Enjoy it.

Hello Tony and thank you for your reply.Today I had my Sr 80 for a reliable comparison at my local Naim dealer, who was very pleased to meet me again, after my 282 purchase....Source was an Pioneer streamer and the headphones amp was an Lehmann Acoustics.I first listened to my SR then a pair of Sennheiser HD 660.I demoed the HD 700 and also a pair of Grado SR325E.I choosed the 700 because I wanted a completely different headphones from mine.Sound quality is superb.A running in period?!I love running in period! Will let you know.Ciao.
