NAIM Nova issues first week owner

Posted by: BeppeP on 13 April 2018

Dear all, been an happy owner of Nova since a week now and I would like to report few issues I am experiencing.

when I turn on the Nova it produce a sound in my speakers constant, it like that there is an electrical tension or signal going similar to the sound when analog headphones are plug in old amplifiers, or a guitar into an amplifier, is it normal?

Sometimes Spotify crash and the nova return to menu select source

The application crash very often and ask to setup a new device or go into loop looking for rooms

HDMI shows no signal input, I tried to plug two different laptops (windows and mac) plus my TV nothing. I read someone in the forum had similar problem and got a replacement, is this the case?

I plugged a pre phono amplifier to analog input, the sound was looping then stopped to work.

well,as first week is quite a lot, wondering if I got a faulty device.

please let me know how should handle these.

thanks

One thing at a time!! First, regarding HDMI: is the output on your TV an HDMI ARC output, not just any old HDMI out? Have you set the TV sound output to PCM stereo? Is the firmware up to date on your Nova?

The answer is yes, is an ARC output, I can select PCM stereo or auto, I selected PCM. Do the laptop have the same? Do I need to change HDMI cable?it might be an old one I am using.

I doubt it will work with a laptop - do they have ARC outputs? I use a very cheap HDMI 1.4 cable, and it works OK. Naim specify 1.4 or 2.0 versions.

There have been some stability issues with HDMI, and Naim issued a firmware update recently which has helped to improve HDMI stability, so you should make sure you have done this.

I have the last firmware installed, I will try within another cable or by toslink.I don't know if laptop have arc output.

Am I the only one experiencing the stage sound in the speaker when I turn on the nova? Is like a buZz as the current is always on..

One less, the analog input I set at 1v and the phono pream works. Is the right setting?

That is how I have set mine and it works nicely set to 1V. I find that this gives the closest volume match to other inputs.

My Nova makes no noise at power on.

Can be the power strip? I have several devices on the same one, maybe they make interferences..

I move the ground in the back and the sound is much less, however seems that there is a flush sound coming from the tweeters and I can hear only if I put my ears close. Probably is normal?!

Naim equipment can hiss when powered on. The better the quality of the mains, the less pronounced the hiss tends to be.

It is advisable that other home appliances are not on the same mains ring or spur.
