Nac 272 successor
Posted by: jsaudio on 14 April 2018
So when do you think an update or successor to the NAC 272 will be announced? I think it is highly unlikely that Naim will leave the 272 as is as the only streamer without the new streaming platform for very long.
Any thoughts?
I spoke to a Naim rep at a recent show and he said as it was only released in 2015 at will be manufactured for some time to come. Hope so I have just bought one !!

That's as much as you'll get from Naim!
I note the format of the new streamers sample rates and 32 bits and think it will be a while before we can get any purchased files at these rates so think 272 will be safe for a while. G Mac

Nice one
My guess is that Naim will prep a 272 Mk 2 or a 372, but not announce it until sales of 272s start to sag.

Thought the 272 mk2 with firmware 4.6 is already with us
The 272 is still cracking value...in a very expensive naim range...and can perform well even on its own
It's capabilities are showcased with the addition of a power supply thought..
I think the 272 with hold its value well on the second hand scene for a good while so no worries about buying new now
The only other product in the naim range that offers such value is ..... The supernait 2. IMO
A 272 sucessor will be inevitable in the near future, but only Naim wil know when
Same here. I am very happy with the performance of my 272, especially since adding a pre-loved non DR 555PS. It already sounded really good without any power supply. Adding an XPS DR was a big step up and with the recent addition of a 555PS, it really took the performance up a notch or two. A really big improvement. The recent firmware was also very welcomed to keep it somewhat current. As much as I am curious to see what will replace it, I am in no hurry to do so.
As just a data point my dealer - who shall remain nameless - here in the US has put his demo 272 up for sale, which is something he normally only does when Naim advises that something new is on the horizon.
I’ve read on here that Naim have said that the 272 will carry on for at least two years. I wouldn’t read anything into a dem model being put up for sale.
If 272 is not to be discontinued shortly perhaps the mythical 372 is about to be introduced or is some indeterminate months away? We shall see what we shall see; fingers crossed.
It's totally normal for dealers to rotate dem stock every 12-24 months.
Bear in mind that in Naim years, the 272 is still a baby. As an aside, I'd suggest if it already has the functionality you want and is in the desired budget, there is no reason to hold off buying one.
I agree completely. Only my dealer doesn't rotate stock: he still has (or had, IDK) an original NDX that couldn't be updated via firmware to support Tidal, for example, and his UnitiServe demo unit still had the original 1 TB drive. Good guy but he's a bit of a tube snob and the transistor gear in his shop doesn't get the same love.
Bit odd. If you hang on to stock you have to depreciate it like anything else on your balance sheet. Plus, hang on to it too long and it will eventually come up for service and potentially cost a dealer more.
In any case. Naim have not indicated a replacement. Even if there was one, most dealers would only know days in advance and be subject to in information embargo whereby they can't tell anyone. I think reading stuff into this is as accurate as reading tea leaves.
You could always put him on the spot and ask "You stubborn git. You never sell anything ex dem this quickly. Why this? Why now?"
I ordered my 272 with the FM tuner module. Have I wasted my money ? G Mac

It depends why you bought one with an FM module. It works fine and FM will be around in the UK for a few years yet I think. So probably the answer is "no".

My concern was the longevity of FM as I thought it was getting switched off.

You can find this discussed in another recent thread. But although the decision hadn't yet been made, the BBC have come out recently and said they want to continue simulcasting so it seems unlikely that the Government will move to prevent that.
In any case the module also gives you DAB and although the quality of UK DAB is dreadful currently, it is possible that could change in the future.

With luck & a fair wind - & don't hold yer breath - we could get a UK.Gov announcement on whats happening with FM. Lets hope sometime soon & while they're at (it fingers crossed) the BBC will move out of the jurassic age & start transmitting DAB+ Problem is SQ will only be better if they don't go for a lower bitrate in an attempt to match/balance the existing SQ with bandwidth economy as have the commercial DAB+ stations.
I think FM will be around for a good while to come. If I didn’t already have a NAT 01 I’d be looking to invest for sure. You can’t have enough sources especially after wasting a morning with Apple support sorting out the issues created by the latest High Sierra release - and to think that some have a go at Naim re software bugs!
I doubt with the launch tragedy of the Unity range, that Naim will llaunch any new products before the streamers has been released. And the release date has not been made public now. Knowing what name knows I would not risc massive digital kaos and disappointment from users.
Hopefully in 2019 or 2020 we will see themythical 272 or even better 372, or a preamp with a dac inside but needing an external streamer?r
I am still not sure it will be replaced any time soon, or at all. The NDS gets replaced by its sibling NDX2, new platform moving SQ forward at a relatively lower price. Do Naim want to compete with the new streamers and Uniti Nova. Personally, I think a new range of App based preamplifier is more likely, perhaps a 372 drops out of that development.
