Insured transit value for 552PS

Posted by: GerryMcg on 15 April 2018

I am about to send my 552PS to Class A at Sheffield, but am  a bit uncertain of the insurance value I should register with the courier. As far as I know you cannot buy a 552PS separately and I cannot find a cost price for it anyway.

Any help will be appreciated.

OK thanks that’s useful, although I am not sure if you are able to buy separately.

you really should list the value of a full 552 to cover worst case scenario.

you just cannot buy a 552PS separately.

I think Naim would build you a replacement power supply should the worse happen, why not give them a call and find out.

I’m sure you can. You just need to ask. So, to the OP, if you want the replacement cost of a 552PS then just ask Naim.

Whether or not you can buy a separate 552PS, insuring it will cost you an arm and a leg... and a good part of the rest of your body too.  It will probably be cheaper to deliver it personally by taxi.  Which carrier will you be using (if not a taxi) ?

I wish you good fortune Gerry.

Of course, if you enjoy the occasional adrenaline rush, you could parcel it up, declare the value at something within their 'up to the value' (usually about £50) and send it on its way.  This would give you at least one full night, and a few hours the following day, of sleepless excitement... what do you think ?

If at all possible, I would take it myself. If arranged in advance, they can usually do it while you wait. You don't say which island you live on, though.....

Alternatively, get the Naim factory to do it. Probably more expensive, but you only have to take it to your dealer who will arrange delivery to Naim. (Plus they can also DR it while it's there!!!)

Hi all

Thanks for the feedback. Self delivery is not an option i am too far away. I guess I should check with Naim tomorrow, I was just trying to arrange the delivery today for pick up tomorrow, in order to avoid possible absence for two weekends.  If Naim could replace it separately and cost is around £8,000 insurance may not be too bad. I have already had it DR'd by the way. I would send to Naim but it would probably take a few weeks and Class A advise around a week.

The 552 not only does music but also the TV sound, hence the desire to limit its absence.

It would be worth speaking to Darran to see if their courier could collect it from the Island. It’s likely to be cheaper as he very likely has a deal with a courier company, and he will have the insurance sorted, given he has got to get it back to you. If it’s collected on Tuesday it should be back by Friday.

I was under the impression that most of the guts of a PSU were replaced in the DR upgrade - so I'm surprised it needs a service/recap now. Maybe it's just a fault repair?

My 552 came back from DR & service with a very occasional 'pop' from the left channel, however this has become more frequent.  A number of folk have suggested possible diagnoses and I haven't tried all the suggestions as yet, but it interests me that here's another 552 that's on its way back for some reason after a DR upgrade.

What is the reason Gerry?

It's also worth noting that insurance underwriters are likely to reimburse the total loss of a package only up to its residual value, not necessarily the value you insure the item for (i.e., replacement value of a new item). When I shipped my three-year-old SN2 I insured it for its s/h market value ($3,200) not for the replacement cost of a new unit ($6,000).  As far as I know insurers will also NOT reimburse a loss for the cost of shipping and insurance; only the value of the item shipped. Good to get the details before shipping an expensive item. Insurance is costly and you don't want to overpay for it.

That's a good idea. I'll contact them today.

I didn't appreciate that. There is no fault with the product it is just that it's 12 years old and the recommended service interval is 10-12 years. I will contact Naim to confirm.

Thanks Jo, interesting to know what the residual value is, as it cannot be bought separarely in ther market.

I thought that when the DR upgrade is done, it’s only serviced and recapped if that is specified. If that’s the case, the service may still be required. For what it’s worth, I thought the 500 series had a longer service interval. 15 years comes to mind, but it may be my imagination. Anyway, a call to Naim will confirm what was done at the time of the DR upgrade, and whether servicing is now required.

Thanks Nigel,

No. I did not have it serviced at the time it was DR'd, as I thought this was at a 15 year interval, however checking recently, the head unit service interval is 15 years but the PS is 10-12 years.

Just checked the work sheet for mine (from last week). The DR and service are separate items though the service part seems relatively light (apart from replacing three caps). Interestingly the notes say:

"Service and DR upgrade

Replaced the logo, reservoir caps and applied DR upgrade

Purple tinted logo"

Purple! What?

Gerry,

which courier are you using? Last time I had to send something, most of the delivery services seem to exclude amplifier and fragile item. They’ll allow you to buy insurance but would cap insurance payout (DPD for example).

Hi Chris, the best appears to be TNT who "cover" up to £5000, although I will check the terms and conditions with them.

Sorry to repeat myself, but it would be sensible to arrange it with Darran. Whoever he uses clearly has the right cover. It would save a lot of time and worry.

Nigel that is what I am attempting first, he is not answering the phone at the moment.

There’s no rush. If it can’t be arranged this week it could go next week. Then, if picked up from you on Monday, there is a full five days to get it back by the weekend.

Thanks Nigel. I contacted Naim who confirmed that they would replace the PS  at a cost of £7,500.
