Cisco 2960 and Apple Extreme help please

Posted by: Laurie Griffiths on 18 April 2018

Can someone help me with the right way to setup my reset Cisco 2690, my Apple extreme router, NDS and NAS please? I can make bits work but not all. As it stands all the internet, server and streamer work when plugged into the Apple router but I was interested to see if the Cisco switch would improve things as suggested by some learned members of this forum. Would someone kindly explain how I need to plug it all together. Do I need to restart the NAS?  Thank you.

You need the following schematics (picture courtesy of Mike-B)

Your Apple Extreme starts and defines the network.

1. Take the signal out from AE, using a LAN cable and plug it into your switch.

2. All networked devices plug into the switch

3. All devices should be off. Start powering them up, one by one. AE first, the switch as a second one, etc...

Hi Laurie, you should be able to simply connect your Airporr Express, streamer, NAS and any other devices into the switch ports. These switches take a few minutes to start up, then everything should just work.

There is a possibility that the previous owner has configured the switch in some way that is not standard, but that isn’t normally a problem. The solution would be to reset it to factory defaults.

You probably don’t need to restart anything, but it won’t do any harm.

Use Mike's approach to network layout and start up, he knows his stuff does Mike.
