Never seen that option on my NDX I think its just on or off.

It’s best to have the screen off as much as possible, as they are prone to failure if kept on.

It can be switched off after a pre-set amount of time e.g. 30 secods

Thank you, my screen must have died then as it is very dull, I can’t read anything on it. 

Many have reported this issue; it happened to mine.  Fixed under warranty. All I had to pay was $50 (I think) to my dealer for shipping.

Inconvenient, but well handled by Naim.

As you are in UK if you take it back to the dealer who sold it to you and it's under warranty, I don't think you have to pay for the shipping either.
