4.6 and Tidal dropouts

Posted by: Finkfan on 19 April 2018

After recently updating my 272 firmware to version 4.6 (which is sounding superb by the way) I have, for the first time, started experiencing dropouts on Tidal. I had no such problems at all whilst running version 4.4. This morning was the third time Tidal just stopped mid way through a track after about an hour of listening. Nothing has changed in my setup. I have informed Naim support.

I have had the opposite happen. Had plenty of dropouts the last couple of months. Enough to where I rarely listened to Tidal at night. Too frustrating. After upgrade I had 2 dropouts the first day. None since. Even at night. Sound is amazing. Stunned by the difference with Tidal sq. Fingers crossed the dropouts stay away from here.

I thought I was going mad but my 272 has dropped out a few times since the 4.6 update and put this down to the internet even though I have a stable 100mb fibre connection?

Anyway it's sounding mighty fine and the drop out maybe coincidental and fault could be with Tidal but time will tell....

I had the occasional drop out when using TIDAL before 4.6 and couple of times in the past eight days. I have ran for several days at a time without any issues. Sometimes I will restart the album at the song where the drop out occurred and it will play to the end. If I restart and it drops out a second time, then I will start on the next song and have had success with the album playing to the end. If the problem persists then I just playing albums from the NAS. Usually going back to TIDAL later in the day or evening and things are fine.

I chock it up to the mysterious world of the internet.......

Hmmm... I had several cases of tidal just stopping for no reasons on 4.6

always had the occasional stopping with tidal even with tidal.  the only 4.6 difference i can detect is a slight improvement in bass playing hi rez content

With 4.6 my ND5XS couldn't connect to the Spotify server even after a factory reset. With 4.4 no such problems. Naim should test the 4.6 version better.

The dropouts are not from what I have seen is not an issue with the firmware, more an unfortunate side effect from the streamer hardware. I suspect the newer streamer platforms will be updated here. The firmware streamer board code has been pretty well optimised to get the best from the hardware resources available. If your round trip path from the streamer to the cloud service providers providing the Tidal streams exceeds a certain latency at specific times, this stresses the streamer network stack and may cause dropouts or connection resets for higher bandwidth data such as FLAC.

Since this latest round of updates, I have had the occasional dropout on both NDX and Atom, which is a bit worrying, as I was not one of those affected by this issue before.

Definitely think this is a latacy (ping time) problem

So not really a 4.6 issue ...hence some have seen improvement in drop out and some it's got worse ...it's random !

My 272 had drop outs according to its mood, Somedays are smooth somedays impossible to listen... ok it is not a Seal breaker, 272is a superb sounding kit with a Power supply...

Cisco switch, good cat6 cables and vodka Diamond at the end, 50mbps connection... tested with pc, works ilke a charm ...

now i am using ak sp1000 dap for Tidal streaming, not a single drop in 100+ hours with WiFi...

so it was time for new streamers......

I have had 4 cases of my SU just stopping mid stream after updating to 4.6 a couple of days ago. Never had that with 4.4. I did occasionally get pauses due to buffering but never a full stop.

Latency checks imediatley after the stop shows nothing unusual and download speed more than adequate.

On my SU2, I was having endless issues using 4.3, got hold of the (then) beta firmware, and haven't looked back since. All seems equally fine on 4.6. I do have good bandwidth, even living in the middle of nowhere, though my latency isn't always great. I think as Simon-in-Suffolk has said, the older streamers such as mine have probably been optimised as best they can be given the hardware, so whilst things are fine just now, I'm resigned to either upgrading to the new Uniti range, or an external streamer in the fullness of time...

Same here. Been listening to Tidal for a few months with no issue, but after the 4.6 update I've had a handful of times that Tidal just stops mid song. Usually the same moment in the same song. Very strange.

Since I upgraded to 4.6 my Tidal dropouts have decreased.  Immediately after the upgrade the dropouts were terrible the first day.  Must have dropped 20 times in a 2 hour period.  Since then, only had 2 or 3 drops in approximately 20 hours of listening.   Hope it continues.

I reported an issue with Tidal just stopping (4 posts above) but since my post it has been fine, no Tidal dropouts at all. In fact I'm very happy with the 4.6 SQ on my SU / 250DR / PMC Twenty26 system.

Since starting this thread a couple of weeks ago I’ve had no further dropouts on Tidal

That’s certainly a good improvement, but it must mean that Tidal drops out for you most days. I would still see that as an issue that needs to be resolved.

With the previous firmware version (4.4?) on my ND5 XS Tidal dropped out so often that I usually gave up trying to listen to it.

With a beta version of firmware 4.6, there were almost no drop-outs.

Now with the final version of firmware 4.6 there are more drop-outs than with the beta version, but it is still much better than firmware 4.4(?).

It’s strange how people’s experiences vary so much, I wasn’t affected by the dropout issue in 4.4, but like you, I do have occasional dropouts on the 4.6 official version.

I think there will always be some drop outs with my system.  Blame it on whatever, BUT as long as it is seldom, not often I’ll live with it.   Streaming tidal has destroyed my album/cd listening.   Maybe it’s me, but it is nearly impossible for me to make it through an entire album or cd.

Hi,

i own a ND5 XS hard wired to optical fiber running at 100 Mbit/sec. Never had any issue with Tidal...until about 2 months ago. No way to listen to Tidal, not even in the low res option. In the meantime I upgraded to 4.6 but nothing changed. I wrote to NAIM last week and I am still waiting for an answere.

Of course I am disappointed with that, especially if the problem is a hardware issue not solvable by a firmware upgrade.

I imagine two options: a recall action with a free hardware fIX or a fair trade in program for the substitution with a new streamer.

I bought the steamer also because of theTidal feature. And I have chosen Naim because I trusted this company as a reliable high end manufacturer. I hope a solution will soon come out. In the meantime I started to buy again music ...

Done quite a lot of listening to Tidal this weekend on my 272. Two things hitting me. Definite improvement in SQ since 4.6 and lots and lots of dropouts. I have same Netgear Router for many Years normal broadband via John Lewis very frustrating

Hi, after several months Tidal dropouts seems to have disappeared. Since I did not do any changes, I deduct It was the Internet service provider, Fastweb, which changed some parameters like latency for a while. Now crossing fingers and enjoying 4.6 upgrade.

I’m happy to report that I’ve had no further dropouts too.

I've been speaking with Naim/Phil Harris and moved back to 4.5. having done had no dropouts and (to my ears) slight drop in SQ. He has gone to the Software developers

Having said that a few dropouts this weekend for the first time on 4.5. Rebooted my Router and no further issues

Tempted to reinstall 4.6 - Is it possible changes have been made?
