4.6 and Tidal dropouts

Posted by: Finkfan on 19 April 2018

After recently updating my 272 firmware to version 4.6 (which is sounding superb by the way) I have, for the first time, started experiencing dropouts on Tidal. I had no such problems at all whilst running version 4.4. This morning was the third time Tidal just stopped mid way through a track after about an hour of listening. Nothing has changed in my setup. I have informed Naim support.

The latest firmware has been optimised pretty much as much as it can within the limitations of the network streaming components of the original classic series streamers. Because of the limited resources in terms of segment buffer memory, these streamers will always be slightly vulnerable to TCP level latency. This can be excaserbated with a

  • busy music streaming server.. kind of less likely now to use of main cloud based services,
  • internet routing to the cloud servers via your ISP.. quite likely, some ISPs/regions will be better than others,
  • ISP backhaul.. again some ISPs better than others, you tend to pay for what you get here with broadband services,
  • contention on your internet access, quite likely, especially if others are sharing your access and it is of modest bandwidth (‘speed’)
  • Home network delay.. less likely if using Ethernet, more likely with poor consumer grade Wifi implementation  and even more likely with home Ethernet alternatives like Poweline Adapters. Some consumer routers undertaking security inspection functions which don’t have hardware off loading can be vulnerable here, especially with higher bandwidth internet connections.

Hi All,

Simon has pretty much summed it up in his posts, but if you feel that you are a victim of substandard Tidal service, then please  get in contact with our help desk.  We will need to know the following info to raise a case with Tidal engineering:

1.  your account username

2. Your ip address ( use website like wanip.info )

3. Isp and country / location you are based

4. When the dropouts occured (day / time).   Ideally try and report the track it was playing at the time.

5, Product + firmware version

Naturally in the world of the internet there are a lot of companies and variables between the playback device and the servers hosting the stream, but we have been successful in the past of tracking down some regional and country dependant issues.

Best regards
