Choosing the right NAS for use with Asset as UPnP server

Posted by: Maughan67 on 21 April 2018

Hello all.

I need to replace my old WD NAS because it only supports Twonky, and I want to use Asset (which I am currently using, but via my laptop). I have read here that Qnap NAS products support Asset - but I am still a bit nervous about selecting a NAS that is definitely compatible (and I also don’t yet have a clue about how I get Asset onto the NAS - but that will have to be another thread).

Is this one suitable?!

(I only need a single bay because I will keep a full back-up on my current WD NAS. This new NAS is solely to serve my NDX.)

Thank you!

Matt

Hi Matt, the QNAP NAS units definitely support Asset; well at least the ones I have do. I run a TS-453S PRO which is a 4 bay model which I have populated with 4 2.5” SSDs. It’s very fast, and completely silent. There is a fan, but it hardly ever spins up to audible levels other than during the boot up sequence.

To get Asset running you have to download the Asset QPKG file into a local directory onto you PC, Mac or whatever. Log in to the QNAP admin using a browser, then from the QNAP application manager manually select the QPKG. In  a few seconds it will be installed, then you can jump to the Asset configuration screen ( by clicking on the new Asset icon which will no be in the list of installed apps). Here you can set up the music folder and other settings. It’s quite easy and in my case has never let me down. Asset is by far the most customisable and best uPnP server in my experience.

Dave.

QNAP TS-251A with 2 x WD 2TB hard drives running asset here. Reliable and easy to use.

QNAP.

make sure that the drives are for use in a NAS.

yes another Qnap - I use the fanless HS210 with WD mirrored,, I started on Wonkey and moved over to Asset when QNAP software upgraded

Asset 6 works really well, and it's easy to download and set up on NAS - all of my files are in FLAC and Asset transcodes to WAV by ticking FLAC play as WAV

Another vote for Asset with QNAP. Asset R6 now has the added advantage of being able to have different "Instances" (i.e. 2 or more Asset libraries which can have different browse trees e.g. for Classical where you might want to browse by composer or where you might want to keep your Classical and Rock/Other libraries apart).

Also note what Adam has said about NAS Hard Drives (i.e. powered 24/7). Western Digital Red HDs seem to be very popular with users here.

Time has moved on since WD Red HDD's became the forum favourite so I had a look to see if times & recommendations have changed in the business & IT NAS world.    WD Red still seems to get votes as does Seagate Ironwolf.  The higher speed  (access speed & disk RPM)  'Pro' versions are not required for audio NAS use.     The underlying message seems to be the same as Adam's post,  make sure the drive is spec'd for NAS & avoid the lower cost 'Desktop' rated drives

I have a Qnap 253A which works well with Asset.  It has twin drives sonic one conks out the other keeps going and you can just add a new one. For backup, I use USB drives, which backup at the touch of a button. This may be easier than backing up to the existing Nas.

Indeed gents.

Another thread which runs through all our posts - back-up. RAID is one thing, another is a proper backup or a copy of all files. To be kept away from the network.

Thanks all.  The order has been placed...

(And thanks Dave for the installation explanation. Very clear - best I’ve seen!)
