Super-lumina Centering
Posted by: Bob_B on 22 April 2018
Just been re-centering the Superlumina from CDS3 to NAC 252 DIN-to-DIN. Wiggle left to right in order to centre then pull out by about a mil. Amazed at the improvement in musicality, flow, detail and richness resulting.
If the Suprlumina has one flaw it is its sensitivity to being set up optimally. Big gains once this is achieved.
And for what it's worth, I did try adjusting the DIN portion of my SL DIN to XLR interconnect. Maybe I jiggled when I should have wiggled, but no sonic epiphany.
docmark posted:Richard, with all due respect, I can understand your position on this. You are, after all, employed by Naim. I appreciate all the hard work & design Naim put into their equipment and cables. Still, if I pay $4,000 for a short piece of cable, such as the SL DIN to XLR interconnect, I don't care who makes it - I expect it to work without fussing with it. As you say, though, there are plenty of other good standard leads and connectors out there.
Docmark, barring my hands on past experience, my position on this has nothing otherwise to do with my past employment with Naim or even my existing arrangements with the company.
The bottom line, if you go to plug in the Sl i/c it will work fine without fuss.
It's just, as in most things hifi related at this high level, a little extra care in the installation or application helps obtain the maximum performance potential.
Yes, Naim make other good "standard" leads and connectors. But even here, some of us try to push the potential sonic performance by easing back locking collars (or even removing them altogether - not recommended on SNAICs) and trying to ensure that cables are dressed to minimise stresses and parallel runs (except where such things are desirable such as between SNAIC5 and Burndy on a 252 and 552).
Well, jiggle and wiggle, if it works for you fine by me. Perhaps I’m lucky, I installed mt SLs , withdrew by the stutory 1mm and all has been fine since. OK so a little myrth but at least I own the SLs rather than those who carp on and don’t.
After years in clinical development I’ve often been amazed at the strength of the placebo effect. Topical pain relievers are around 50-60% placebo effect but who gives a monkeys so long as they work for you and don’t even start me on hypnotics
Thanks all for your thoughts, I think Richard hits the nail on the head with the comment that this adjustment helps to obtain the maximum performance potential. The two CDs which made the gains obvious to me were ‘Speaking of Now’ and ‘Imaginary Day’ by the Pat Metheny Group, both recordings which are packed with layered nuances and where changes in timing and transient handling are quite obvious.
When I switched from Hiline To SL the gains were obvious from the start and significantly accrued as it burnt in. It was never less than ‘excellent’ with the CDS3/555PS. The extra tweek has put the icing on the cake so one very happy camper here !
